Problem with just meeting a random guy is that while they may mean well, they may not have the knowledge you are seeking - the guys I mentioned do; you will see all the MP's as well as get a perspective from guys who know the deal.

The only money you will waste is if you pay cien. Depending on where you are staying you should have no problem spotting the mongers. I would suggest going to SL or HLH and sit at the bar and observe. You will have girls coming up to you shortly at the SL but I would look for a guy that looks friendly and just walk up to him and say something like "Excuse me this is my first time in Costa Rica would you mind giving me some insight about how things work here". After he tells you to piss off ask the bartenders they are all nice... Just kidding most of the guys visiting should be happy to help a newbie out.
