I like Chubbs for taking a break during the day or evening. I think their bucket of Imperial is still 6 beers for 5000c. I don't think you would find anything cheaper then that in the Gulch. And they have some decent bar food as well. There's a huge thread on them on the forum here somewhere. I've also taken my favorita in there a few times for dinner.

I've only ever been in the SL once, but the atmosphere was nice and I don't recall the prices being outrageous enough to remember. I don't usually drink much liquor as I am more of a beer man, but when I do, it's usually something with rum in it.

I usually stay at La Amistad and it was always nice to bring your girl to the bar there, whether just for drinks or for a nice dinner as well. Unfortunately, the great bartender they had is no longer there, I hear. I'm hoping it's still nice. I'll find out next month I guess. I got used to Cesar knowing how to make me the perfect piña colada, just the way I liked it.

I avoid the DR unless I am on the prowl. It's too noisy and the girls are too aggressive to just relax in that place and have a drink. But when you are out mongering, it's great to go to the Blue Marlin in the afternoon and get out of the heat, while sucking back a cold one and checking out the 'talent'. When I am doing stuff during the day, I like to spend some time at the BM in the afternoon before heading back to my hotel for a nap and a shower. A lot of times, I make arrangements to meet someone I met at the BM later on that evening.

If you get to know a girl well and want to do a regular 'date' with her, you should let her take you to one of the local's places outside of the gulch. One of the best nights I had in CR was at a club called Castro's with a really fun tica who got me doing karaoke and shots of tequila with some of her family and friends. The bill was super cheap after a full night of partying, eating and drinking.

PlaneCrazy, Castro's is a good find, lots of fun. I love to wander into Tico bars in San Jose. I see a big drop in prices there.

You can find 3rd World-priced bars and beer joints all over CR. The gulch is a "special case" in that it that it caters to a gringo clientele with money to spend. A bottle of Imperial purchased in a tico bar may cost you 2 - 4 times more if purchased in one of the more popular gulch establishments.

Our happy hour is 750 colones per beer, lower than most Tico joints.

I've never been to HLH yet. I am definitely going to try and get a visit in this time down. Need to check out your happy hour :)

HLH is a great part of the gulch. Especially for newbies and especially-especially for guys on a time crunch. Plus great to knock out a nuisance nut. Plus if you want to have two girls at a time plus, well its a great place.

Don´t necesarily recommend it for everyone, but was drinking on 6th street yesterday across from a $12 mp. The litre bottle of Pilsen was 1700 colones. Can´t beat that one with a stick.

Yeah, I have to say the DR is probably the worst (I am sure someone will correct me) as far as the average price of a beer and the fact that the bartenders there (at least some of them) actively rip-off patrons; still going on according to a guy I was hanging with last trip over Memorial Day   . I like the fact that BK has instituted a Happy Hour or two at the HLH and if I lived in CR, I would definitely look for the the best bang for the buck, such as the places TW suggests. BTW, where is Castro's? :?:

Castro's is in Barrio Mexico. Not good with directions and have only been there by taxi, but it isn't too far from the gulch...

Here's what TicoParty says: http://www.ticoparty.com/Bares-Costa-Rica/Castros-Bar/ << Kinda thin--just Phone #
And for future reference: http://www.ticoparty.com/Bares-Costa-Rica/San-Jose then scroll down to an establishment and click. Might come up with something like this: http://www.ticoparty.com/Bares-Costa-Ri ... nte.Tibas/
Anyway Castro's is big fun--dance floor down, karaoke upstairs w/full English catalog

I love Castros as well. Nightclub on the first floor, karaoke bar on the second. I've been there twice. Prices are very reasonable. Karaoke bar has a menu with a decent selection. Also I saw a guy that lived there and he brought his own CD's and they let him play what he wanted to sing along to.

Off the topic of beer prices but talking about dance spots:
Casa Zeller
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=36429 << read Brother C'dude's responses on this
http://www.ticoparty.com/Bares-Costa-Ri ... eller-Bar/ << This site is so generally useful

This is a live music place and gets jammed.
