As I private messaged blueeyedcbr as far as I know it is illegal to possess a knife. That doesn't stop anyone, including the theives, from carrying them. A friend, female, Tica was recently caught with a small amount of grass and a couple pipes. The police confiscated it and turned her loose. I do not know any Americans who have been arrested on the street in Costa Rica. I do know several who have been caught in violation of the laws. It was worked out on the street. The police here don't want to arrest Americans. They don't really want to arrest anyone. It is more work for them. They will take advantage of this type of situation to improve their income. It is kind of like risking getting traffic tickets in the states. Posting speed limits doesn't stop people from speeding. The cost of paying the ticket deters some violators. As a tourist here, if you don't want to be hastled, use good common sense. Don't walk alone at night. Don't drink and drive. Don't get drunk and go out. At night, use cabs to go from place to place. Use caution going off with locals that you don't really know. If you feel you need a weapon, buy a hardwood cane for about $20 and carry it. It is legal and can be deadly. Fortunately, it is very rare for gringos to be hurt down here during crimes. Gringos will be victims down here. They are easy targets and the criminals know that even if they get caught it is less likely for a gringo to hang around and prosecute. Come down, have fun, use good sense and you are about as safe as you would be in most major American cities. A good wingman is worth his weight in gold.

I feel your need to be prepped for any situation that may arise especially going solo into a new country and all.
Let me reiterate all the previouse post; as long as you stay frosty and use the same common sense youd use in the states, the only thing your gonna have to worry about is which chica to bang 1st at the Del Rey.

I can understand ya. I like to carry a Sysco Brand Plastic Knife (medium weight white polypropylene individually wrapped, 1000 per case). It has helped me open up condoms faster and, once and a while, I may need to use it at the breakfast table if the server forgets the butter knife. Typically, I use it to spread Hellmans mayo on my late night turkey sandwich. Chicas appreciate the sterile wrapped appearance and I believe it has led to me receiving better service.

Best thing I can tell you is if you do walk alone,keep your head up, and walk with a purpose. I try to give off a "dont Phuck with me" vibe when I'm there and alone, if anything to deter people. It helps that I'm 6'1, 260, and pretty young, but I would also try to get a wingman or two just to hang with.

I know 2 weeks ago there were 5 of us and we walked quite a few places at night, and there were no issues.

Well I know now you can keep me safe in march. And I will bring plastic knives to stab people with. Looking forward to hanging.
