Indeed :P :D

I'm at the other end of the food spectrum, I spend less than 5,000 colones for food per day. Easy to do: take advantage of the Amistad's free breakfast by loading up for the day, skip lunch (aside from a Powerbar or pastry), then get a cheap dinner (SL, Pizza Akropolis, McD's). :D

Hiker Tom... With that kind of diet, it''s a good thing you skip lunch. Start the freakin' tuba music.... :P McD.'s? You're kidding, right?

Note that my $30.00/day includes booze (speaking of empty calries and bad nutrition...) But not all the drinks are for me, nd I am willing to treat a favorita or good CRT friend to a meal once in awhile.

$30.00 may be a high estimate...I wasn't exactly going over my restaurant receipts.

Oh, I'm still a slim 150 lbs, if not a bit less. 8) Remember, I also go for long walks, either 1+ hour around town or 2 hours at Parque Sabana, thus the big breakfast. If I do a Sabana walk and then spend a few hours at HLH, I'm typically leaving there aroundd 7:30-8:00. At that point I'm starving and want something fast, so I head to the familar golden arches (walking, of course). You should see what I can do here at home after a 5-hour hike, I can polish off a quarter-pounder, 2 hamburgers, a medium fries and an unsweetened iced tea in about five minutes. :D

And don’t be surprised that after you make your first trip you schedule your second trip within days of your return.

Hi guys,

All of the past postings on this site has helped me a lot. Could you guys help with the following questions as well. Some are rather stupid but I'm a super newbie.

1. Intra-bus seems to be the best way to get from the airport to hotel. Will the other people riding together mostly be normal tourists? Will people look at me weird that I'm going to the SL or HDR? If I decide to take the taxi, it is perfectly safe right?

2. Food budget. How much should I budget for eating mostly in the hotel at SL or HDR?

3. I'm hesitant to bring all of my money in cash. What American bank is best for withdrawing at an ATM in Costa Rica? Is the exchange rate bad and is there a fee for using the ATM?

4. Should I care at all about the swine flu situation?

Thanks guys.

1. Post your trip arrival time/date on the roll call section. There are many members are more than willing to split a cab with you. Taking a cab is your best/safest bet to get to your hotel. Especially if you split a cab with someone, its like $9-10 per person.

2.Like most members have said..you have many options here in CR. You can have your $3-5 meals or you can have expensive meals. Its your vacation your budget. you can eat according to your budget.

3. Depending on the number of days you are staying..I usually budget $100/day in cash. So for my 5 day trip i bring $500 in cash. Rest i would just charge. If you are planning on paying hotel stays in cash then you have to add that to your cash budget.

4. Swine flu, when i was there few wks ago...not much talk about it really..but just bring sanitary wipes and hand sanitizers. It definitely helps.

Hope this helps..have fun in CR. :D

This is the response from the Eaters Anonymous Association

I just got back from an eight day stay at La Amistad and my food bill from everyday lunch and some dinners was $200. Their prices are low, the food is great and the presentation and service is no where to be found in CR. Highly recommend.

BTW – You do not need to be a Fat Albert even if you have a high food bill. My average food bill is about a $100 a day. I’m 6’ tall with a 30 inch waist.

I concur with J0sie:

I stayed 11 days at La Amistad in July/Aug. I ate there at least twice per day, and drank a LOT of Asta's beer. I also treated some chicas to food/drink there. Total damage was US$211. You can't beat the food at Amistad, or the sweetness of Asta and Gretel.
