Did you wear shorts, Lurker?
Did you get a hand up the shorts and onto the small head?
We need a report.

A lot of good tips. I do not recommend to carry your passport, a good clear copy of your passport and a copy of the page with the stamp will work. Used to be just a copy was fine, but now they also want to see your stamp. I have never had any trouble when I presented both copies. And I was in Jaco when the beatle bar got raided and was asked for ID and this worked fine.

Just found this recent quote from Tman:

"You guys might also be interested that the Ticos get a kick out of old gringos running around in shorts, tshirts and tennis shoes in the downtown area. This is not part of their culture for older men...and you will even rarely see young Ticos dressed this way. While many of you probably will say...so what...to this...I would suggest if you want to get further socially or perhaps in business down here...try to dress a little more fitting for the culture. The short, tshirt, tennies routine is primarily for the beach in this culture.

You get further down here dressed classy...say like Dman"

'nough said?

With these posts about why some of you wear shorts...so you can get felt up at the BM...well...I guess I understand better now. I suppose thats why women wear skirts sometimes too? Who knows...

Anyways, fine...wear shorts at the BM, but if you get invited to a business meeting or Tico home for dinner...please dress appropriately. They REALLY dont want to see your legs...well...maybe Dinos.

Nothing beats Izod microfiber golf trousers and silk undies for getting felt up at the bar. Wear em dark so your woody aint quite as obvious. :?

I have a question about taxis. Last time down I didn't use one, but I'll be spending more time in SJ next time and want to know if a cabbie is giving me the wrong price. I know airport is $12, and I've heard most places downtown from DR/Pres are supposed to be $1-$2. Higher at night than in the daytime.

Is that the whole story, or could someone supply additional details about taxis? I want to get around to the malls and various clubs at night.

Also, is there any trick to finding a cab back to the hotel from, say Idem or 747, etc. late at night?

Thanks much.

Ask if the meter works. If not, find another cab.

That is about right. About C500 for a downtown ride in the day or less if the meter says less. Cabs go off meter after 6PM. Then ask before you ride. Usually C500 for a short ride such to and from the Idem. Tips are not expected.
When I go to the airport to return home I usually tip the driver with any left over booze. They love it and I do not want to carry an opened container which tend to leak at low air pressure in the cabin or hold.

This discussion of shorts vs. long pants and Hammer's comments have gotten me thinking again, which is always a dangerous thing. How about some one designing a special pair of mongering pants? They would be long pants but dark and loose fitting (to allow for discrete growth in the crotch area). It would have a variety of zippered pockets to help thwart pickpockets. Actually a sewn-in inside security pocket for your passport etc. would be nice too. But the truly unique feature would be one front pocket with a lightweight plastic zipper at the inside bottom of it. I can see it now. You would be standing at the bar at the BM ordering some drinks for you and your chica. When the bartender hands you your drinks and both your hands are full you would nonchalantly ask your chica to reach in your left front pocket to get some cash to pay for the drinks. Imagine her surprise when she reaches in there only to find bare thigh instead of a wallet. You would have to set your drinks down of course and unzipper the correct pocket to pay the bill, but my quess is that your chica would be so amused that she would not want to remove her own hand. It's just a crazy thought....

CR...its mucn simpler than that. Forget the zippers and designs...just turn your pants inside out. Now...pick one of your front pockets...OK...take the sizzors and cut out the pocket of choice (depending on which way your pecker tends to lean or bend) leaving about 3 inches of the bottomless pocket liner so as not to be TOO obvious. Now you have the choice of either walking down the street with your OWN hand in your pocket, or discretely putting your chica of choices hand in there:). I learned that from my engineering MBA at monger university...I wont even charge CRT members for this design...LOL

Well.. YEAH, of course I realize you could do that! I was just suggesting a more high-tech complete solution that would address a variety of requirements (e.g. camoflaging the tentpole condition, dealing with the street denizens one encounters on the short walks from the BM late at night, satisfying local social mores and being able to use that pocket for other purposes at times). C'mon work with me on this guys! You liked my Ideal Massage Parlor idea, didn't you? Anyway, you missed the MAIN point, which is one can wear long pants and still enjoy the discrete grope.

Allow me to stretch this thread even further off topic for a moment. Of course the well dressed monger outfit would not be complete without the free VIP Presidente Cap and keychain and a CRT polo shirt. How about someone coming up with a source for this so we can identify each other more easily when we are in town? A CRT logo would be both more discrete and shorter than CostaRicaTicas and the reddish wine color with black lettering would be in keeping with the current site colors. I did a quick search and there seems to be a 12 shirt minimum for custom-logo shirts at most sites (unless we pick some sort of stock logo) and a price of $15-20/shirt and a setup fee of $50-100. Of course the larger the order the price per shirt goes down and the set-up is amortized over more shirts or disappears altogether. If we get enough people we should be able to easily get the price per shirt down to under $20 total. If anyone is interested in this or has some other ideas, lets start a seperate thread on it.

CRMonger, for comfortable pants that tend to be roomy in the crotch area try Tommy Bahama silk pants. They don't have all those fancy pockets you mentioned but perhaps your tailor at the cleaners could do something about that. They are very comfortable, roomy crotch, silk so they also look nice. That is what I wear and the girls always love them, they also are about the best looking pair of pants you will find.

CRMonger,

Best money belt in the world.

http://travelstore.ricksteves.com/catal ... =124&id=32

I have worn this all over Europe and Asia, and it is the best.

In Costa Rica, I just carry only the colones I need, no wallet, and I don't carry my passport during the day.

Dino: If I had your body, I would dress like you too. Dman has to compensate with finer clothing for the evening 'hunt'.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Dman
