#1 to me personally is being over excited the first trip.

I remember my first ever venture into the DR, and I was back upstairs after dropping my bags off within 4 minutes. The first girl came up to me, I paid cien like an idiot, and off we went. That was always my biggest regret.

That's a good one, never thought of it but now it's going on the 10 commandments of mongering.

just 3 of the many laws that I've learned through my experience and the experience of others...

1. Never pay up-front. You obviously set yourself up for a lot of unfavorable situations when you give the girl that luxury. I've fallen into that trap more than once. When a girl refuses to do you without prior payment, you can always show her the door (easier said than done).

2. repeat of what cujo said..."settle" for a chica. If you're not excited if not "juiced" about taking a girl, don't do it. Again you set yourself up for disappointment. Obviously tougher for the guys who are there 2 days and have few other options.

3. number 2 leads me to this, never book a trip to CR where you don't give yourself time to truly enjoy yourself. When the trip is too short from the start you force yourself to make a schedule (which is always bad), you settle for less, and you always leave for the airport disappointed that you can't stay longer.

In the end it's all about making decisions that don't give way to possible disappointment.

Sometimes a short trip is better than no trip. I agree with you both on the settle issue. I can usualy find some young thing to get me going. I never forget the MG line NEXT!

To echo what MG said before, from my experience with other guys who come down, two common mistakes that seem almost contradictory are:

Don't overplan.

Do your homework.

Although these two maxims seem contradictory, they are not. Ideally, you read the guidebook (Lonely Planet is my fave) from cover to cover then read the parts you found interesting again, and again. Read as much CRT as you can, and after a dozen hours of that, if you feel you need to, ask a question or two. THEN...

RELAX... As was said earlier, you WILL get laid as often as you like. You will regret a few of your choices, but that's how you learn. As he says, there is always... NEXT!!!

I can't speak for others, and there are some great newbie mistakes listed here. Mine are too numerous to count   but here are my top three newbie f*ckups:

1. Being overly nervous/anxious/wired. Easy to do for a first timer. You forget that hey...it's just sex. The only difference is that it is easy to find and the game is simpler...pay, play, say hasta luego.

2. Being intoxicated. Whether from the altitude, lack of sleep, being wired (see #1 above) or whatever, I find it a whole lot easier to get drunk off my ass in S.J. If you do that, you're literally pissing away the chance for good sex. I try to stay teetotal during the day, then drink after the sun has long gone over the yardarm. And BTW, not drinking makes my yardarm (okay, incharm) work better. :D

3. Not staying within budget. This involves several mistakes mentioned earlier in this thread. Spending too much for a chica's services (i.e. no negotiation), taking chicas you're really not into, overtipping (yes, I do it too), and not being smart about where/what to eat can all negatively affect one's budget.

Fortunately, I have avoided many common newbie mistakes, thanks to CRT and the direct counsel of my CRT brothers. It took me awhile to find my pace and to really be able to work things to my benefit, but fortunately there's all kinds of help here for those who will listen. :)

I won't list my three top mistakes. I think that they have been covered here before.

I will add one thing that hasn't been stated here:

Have a good wingman!

It will really help you get your feet without feeling like you are plunging in the deep end of the pool the first time out. They can show you the hot spots and maybe introduce you to some nice people.

I'll probably get a ration of sh*t for this one, but.......

Not using your eyes.......

The eyes are the windows to the soul. Since my Espanol is malo, and I'm old, I need all the help I can get. As men, we have been conditioned to not look another person in the eyes, it may be confrontational.

Women love it when a man stares longingly through their eyes, and into their souls. They become flush, often looking down, playing with their hair, and become like high school girls. If you choose, you can have a lady across the bar blushing, and very interested in you, without ever saying a word to her, or approaching her.

Before the "you must learn Spanish" starts, I agree that it is always good to also be able to speak to anyone in their native language. Since I don't (I'm trying though), I need to pull out some sh*t.

Listen to what my amigo El Ciego has to say. This man is a champion listener.

Happy holidays to all....

Top three:

1. Too much alcohol. I have seen more ruined trips due to excessive drinking...

2. Overpaying. Gringos seem to think that if a little money is good, a lot will just make it better. What they are actually buying is a loss of respect from every Tico/a that they come in contact with. Paying $10,000c for a $500c cab ride does not make you a hero in the cabbie's eyes, it makes you an idiota...and of course he gave you his business card, a pescado like that does not come along every day.

3. Thinking with the little head. Guys, look at more than her tits and ass. If she is glaring at you through the negocio, it does not mean she loves you...
