One thing--The country is Colombia,; the other is the "Gem of the Ocean". I understand Colombianas get prickly about that...as well as certain Brothers. Just so you know...

 Thanks again jazzboCR, for pointing out the oversight. In my over zealousness to respond, I typed before I thought (if I had thought in Spanish, it would not have happened). There was absolutely no disrespect intended.

So just how does SJO compare with Bogota? Nonstop Flts from Orlando on Jet Blue are cheaper to Bogota than SJO...less that 300 bucks round trip! I am just looking at going there for about 5 days to check it out on my next break the end of Aug. How does the p4p compare, and the general mongering experience? Any advice would be great.

Bogota is not much mentioned here. Try Medellin, Cali or even the subtropical Cartegena...and check these cities out out the ISG Website--a treasure trove of info. Or "Search" here for these cities--all have fans who'd love to tighten you up with info.

Search and ask in the trip around the world section. I am sure a few guys have been there, along with isg as Jazz mentioned.

I had a condo in Boga for about 3 years (2001-2004). Had a GF/wife (Married her in Bogata) so did not play as much as normal for me!   . But there is P4P- several clubs, MPs and a large 'zona rojo' down town, and a million non pros who are always on "ready" :D  :!: . Back then prices were very cheap in the zona rojo--about $10 for full service. One of my ZR regulars moved from there to the REY here in SJ and from $10 to 'cien'  . Bogota is a very nice city, especially for its size; everything is much cheaper there, as in the whole country; it is cold EVERYDAY OF THE YEAR (over 8000 ft altitude); not nearly as dangerous as the US government makes it out to be; has beautiful women from all over Colombia; and all in all is a very nice place to visit but not to live (I do not like having to wear a jacket every day of the year!). Only thing I would suggest is that you speak at least passable Spanish!!!

My friend, Cartagena is subtropical :?: :?: :?:

The average humidity there is 90%
The average high temp is 89%
The average low is 77%
The coldest month of the year averages 88% every day
The coldest temp ever recorded there is 66%

To be subtropical a place must have differences in the seasons--every month of the year is virtually the same except for the amount of rain. Cartagena is one of the hottest , most miserable (in terms of heat and humidity) places I have ever been!!

Cartagena is tropical, not sub tropical! Nothing south of Florida/Texas is concidered subtropical till you get to Paraguay/ southern Brazil/ Chile though places at very hi altitude such as Bogota ARE really subtropical--average low in Boga is about 45% and av high is about 66%. Reason it is not 'sub-tropical' is that there is no seasonal changes in temperature! Bogota can and does get snow, especially on the mountain peaks surrounding the city.

I defer to Brother BB57's knowledge and stand corrected about Cartagena, and the tropical/subtropical difference. I even misspelled it the first time around.

IMMIGRATION- Once you land, proceed to immigration as quickly as possible because the other 149 passengers on your plane are right behind you. As of April 2010, Immigration is now located on the lower level (same level as customs). It can get very busy at times (often 2-3 flights get in at the same time), so the quicker you get there, the faster you’ll be out the airport getting into your ride. There are 2 immigration lines: tourist (visitor) and Costa Rican citizens. There is usually a monger’s dash to immigration on every incoming flight. :P If you want to pick up some duty-free items on the way in, do it after you get through immigration. Don't stop upstairs, there is another one downstairs in customs.

Will someone kindly clarify the quote above? It appears there was an update in April 2010 where Immigration is now located on the lower level (same as customs). Due to the apparent relocation of Immigration, can I still access the duty free shop (for alcohol) after immigration or do I need to stock up before I hit immigration?

Thanks.

As you walk to get your bags after immigration, it will be on the right before customs.

And, having been there yesterday, it has the same stock as the one upstairs. BTW, they are currently (or maybe always til the stock runs out) running a special on Chivas Regal--a 3-pack in a useful knapsack--nice touch, that.

Not always. Popular items yes. Liqueurs and wine are hit or miss.

Yes, You can still access the Duty-Free in baggage claim (that hasn't changed). If there's something specific that you must have, I'd stop upstairs and get it there. Immigration goes quicker now, so you probably won't spend too much more time in line in you stop upstairs.

Immigration may go quicker now but if you are on a Spirit flight, baggage claim goes noticeably slower (a lot more people checking bags). You can get to the duty-free and get back to the carousel (especially if you know pretty much what you want) before all the bags are disgorged onto it. This may put you near the back of the Immigration line but as was said, this isn't near the hold-up it used to be--win-win.

I will be traveling on Spirit. I'm now considering paying their assigned seating fee so I can sit near the front of the plane in order to get through immigration quickly. Great tips brothers. Thank you.
