I'm going to need to pay part up front on my first day for dental. I'm getting a significant discount. All told when done, including hotel cash discount, $15,000! I'm uncomfortable with carrying that much but is there an alternative? I can't think of one. Enlighten a brother, please

transfer the money via wire

this is what ive seen guys do at Costa Rica Dental Clinic..
or pay the dental deposit in cash and the rest via card...

save your cash for the chicas

What I've learned: Customs requires that sums over $10,000 be declared prior to travel. Supplying verification of where the money came from i.e. bank account and where it is going i.e. verification of appointment booked with clinic is also recommended. Instances of seizure of moneys, as far as I've come across, were not declared using this protocol. Plenty of instances of international transport of same with no problems. For every time there is a seizure, there are hundreds (if not thousands) there are not.

I will consider these findings in my my ultimate decision. Costa Rica may have their own separate protocols to follow.

Still, the unanswered question is why pay that much during your first visit, unless you are staying for more than a month. For that amount, you must be planning dental surgery and/or implants. If so, you should have a month break to allow your gums to heal. You should not prepay, except maybe a partial payment for lab work.

A friend of mine is having some implant work done and they required the cost of the implants and bone grafts on the first visit which was about 65% of the total bill. Then if you are having implants you will need 4-6 months before your next visit to have the replacement teeth made and installed. The second visit you will need to plan on at least 8 days to have the parts made and installed. He is using someone that I have previously used and we are both very happy with the work that has been completed.

I'm having a full mouth restoration. Extractions, root canals, crowns, bridges, implants. I know all about the procedures, time frames and processes, thanks. I pay as I go. I don't think this is uncustomary. The bill won't be expected to be paid in full until completion on my return for crowns on implants. I need the cash to cover the work on 1st trip based on most expensive scenario and hotel cash discount. It likely will be less.

Also, the U.S. Govt has a habit of confiscating large sums of money when they find it on you when traveling by air. They assume that you are going to use the money for drugs, so they just take it. This has been happening for many years, but most people are unaware of it.
