As stated, this subject has, over the years, been beaten to death with almost always the same guys on each side. But the one thing that is always there is Orange stating that the reasoning by those for dressing like the Ticos is to "blend in". Orange is the ONLY ONE who repeatedly makes this statement!! That along with "us pasty white guys are not going to fool anybody."
I'm the only one, huh? Selective memory? Every thread on this subject has somebody advising mongers to dress like the ticos to blend in and not make yourself a target. I'm guessing that you probably advised that at some point as well.

Edited to add: Well, well, well... lookie here. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=28605&p=312205&hilit=blend+in#p312205

I have to agree with POPS. In almost every case of guys being mugged, robbed, hazzeled by cops, etc, here, it has been because of the gringo doing something to draw attention to them selves. This old argument "I am an American and I am on vacation, and therefore I will do what I want and dress how I want" is just what usually ends up attracting the "bad" guy to you. The way I see it, you have a choise--Dress the way you want, drank too much, walk alone in areas you shouldn't, get loud and obnoxious, and one not often mentioned her- BE SEEN WALKING DOWN THE STREET WITH YOUR HANDS ALL OVER THAT CUTE HOT SEXI LITTLE 19 YO YOU JUST PICKED UP AT HDR!!! The Ticos love to see you enjoying their "young ladies" OR second choise-- Dress to blend in; act like you belong here; keep a low profile; if you drank too much, take a taxi and or stay in a large group; and when with your chica of choise, take a taxi. If you must walk with her, do not even hold her hand.

At least for the vast majority of us who do not wear shorts, flipflops, and loud shirts here it is a simple matter of showing respect to the people and their customs when in THEIR COUNTRY. Gee, what a novel idea  The one thing is, YES, we Gringos will ALWAYS be recognized as just that, "Gringos"; but we will and do draw less attention if we are dressed more in what is considered "proper attire for men" by the locals than if we are dressed like freaks (in the Ticos minds).

Show respect by how you dress? You should show respect by how you act, like not being a drunken fool in public? Or walking down the street and "talking" at the top of your voice and cursing every other word. That's how you show and gain respect. A "properly" dressed asshole is still an asshole.

BTW- There may be "proper attire for LOCAL men". Tourists are not locals. I have verified this with the 6 Tico men in my family. They told me that they would not expect a tourist to dress like locals.

Yeah, maybe if you were talking to one of the guys from the "Foro". A typical Tico doesn't equate male gringo tourist with sex tourism. Gimme a break.

Yes I know guys are on vacation and "gonna dress like they want" but where the hell is your pride. Would you go shopping (except at Walmart! ) in your home city or town dressed like that?? Ever wonder why we are called "the ugly Americans" But do Ticos really care how we dress? NO!

Exactly. You ARE on vacation, so dress like it. If I wanted to wear khakis and a polo shirt, I'd go to work. And you are correct. At home, I have never "dressed up" to go shopping. I'm probably not "properly" dressed for my hometown it seems then either.

Ticos don't give a shit about how tourists dress, they have their own problems to waste time worrying about us.

The reason some are called ugly American is because they act like it, not because of how they are dressed. They sit around the hotel breakfast table, whip out their camera, and start the slide show and discussing last night's events (in detail) loudly enough for every other tourist and worker there to be in the loop; how about 60 year old gringos cruising the parks or Central and chatting up 19 year olds; or stumbling drunk in public.

I don't think the average gringa tourist is any more exposed than the majority of the little latina hoochies walking the streets. And they aren't dragging 2 Babi*s (by 2 diff't fathers) around at age 19. How's that's for Tica pride?

BB, you have some good points there. Where is your pride? is right. I see some mongers here who are so sloppy I actually wonder how the girls go with them. There was a guy in front of the Dunn Inn at 7am the other day having a smoke who didn't even have a shirt on. There are also, however, others who take pride in their looks and dress appropriately.

Are you trying to say that you have seen me being a "drunken fool in public"??? You obviously do not know me other than what I look like!! I DO NOT DRINK ENOUGH LIQUOR IN A YEAR TO GET DRUNK EVEN ONE TIME!! AND ANYONE THAT KNOWS ME KNOWS THIS AND CAN SET YOUR KNOW-IT-ALL SMART A-- STRAIGHT!!!!! Yes I will admit I tend to talk in a loud voice (all the time). "cursing every other word" ?? :? Unless I am very upset about something (Mad as hell) you will never hear me cursing in public and certainly not around females. Unlike guys your age and younger I was raised in a time when men just did not do that.

WOW! news flash!!! "Tourists are not locals!" For everyone of the "6 Tico men in your family" I can have 50 educated middle class and above ticos (both men and women) who will say your family must not be "typical" and that 'NO, they do not expect 'Gringos' to dress like local because they know that the majority are not going to"!!! Does that mean they do not care? NO!! Does that mean they do not see it as being disrespectful? Actually according to my landlady and her 3 daughters (one is a doctor, one is in management with a large American company here, and one is still going to school) NO, because it is what they expect from tourists!

Again, you know this how!! Out side of your "family" and prostitutes, just how many Ticos have you spent any appreciable time talking to? From your many disparaging comments over the years I WOULD SAY NONE!! IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE AVERAGE TICO IN THIS COUNTRY AND THEY ARE LIKE YOU CONTINUALLY PORTRAY THEM THEN I MUST HAVE BEEN NOT LIVING IN THE SAME COUNTRY FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS. IN OTHER WORDS BEFORE YOU START TELLING EVERYONE HOW TICOS ARE, GET OUT OF THE GULCH AND DESEMPARADOS AND LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT THE "REAL TICOS"!! And as for members of the foro, the implication in your comment again shows just how little yo know!! The Foro is a huge site with well over 1 million members (most are actually women) and it cover topics dealing with every walk of life in Costa Rica! In other words it is NOT JUST A MONGERING SITE NOR A SEX SITE!! Sounds like you might be very surprised to learn just how many people in this country are well aware of what the single gringo is here for (often even those that really arn't here for that)!

First, I AM NOT ON VACATION!! I live here and have for 10 years!! Before that yes the many times I visited here for 11 years before moving here, I WAS A TOURIST on vacation!! How did I dress? NOT in shorts and flips for sure! I was coming here to see a chica friend who was a member of the second oldest family in CR and she would not have gone anywhere in public with me in shorts!! OH, and just what is the "vacation dress code" that you are referring to when you state "so dress like it"?? :?

I did not say a word about the Gringa tourist being "EXPOSED"! Actually from what I have seen they dress just like they do in the states--sloppy, baggy, mismatched cloths, no make-up, and uncombed hair which leaves them anything but feminine nor sexy looking (and very covered-up!) unlike most of the Ticas I see who obviously that pride in how they look when they leave their house.

And again there you go showing your lack of real knowledge of Ticos!! Why would you make such a comment
( "the majority of the little Latina hoochies{??? that word is not in my English nor Spanish vocabulary!} walking the streets are dragging 2 babis (by 2 different fathers) around at age 19")May be true{ ???} of a majority the chicas working in the gulch (but I would have to see actual data)! Absolutely NOT TRUE of the majority of Ticas in this country.

Well ... this has gotten a bit personal, hasn't it.

Every time someone asks this question, it is NEVER about pretending to be a tico. It IS about blending in and not standing out like a clown. Some people care about this, and some don't. I go to church where a guy comes in every Saturday evening in a sleeveless shirt, with naked lady tattoos up each arm. He doesn't care what people think about him, and so he doesn't care if he stands out (or may offend high-minded jerks around him).

You are noticeable simply as a gringo, but no one notices you for this because it is commonplace. They are probably accustomed to the shorts/flipflops/gold chain thing too, so it might just be a moot point. [EDIT] you WILL stand out as a gringo in some areas of the city that you shouldn't be in anyway ... we are discussing the main downtown gulch areas in this thread.

Again, the question is asked by newbies that want to dress the way the locals dress, which includes climate dress. No one is trying to pretend to be a tico.

Once again, the Dwarf has it right. Dress the way you want but always maintain a low profile
