I know some folks think I talk great about Jaco for my business interests although I swear, I think it is the place for the best quality girls in CR, honestly. This is also what I hear from almost every single guy who goes there, grumpy excluded. Also think it is the best place to spend a vacation. On my recent 'vacation' took my wife to Jaco and stayed in the Del Mar condos with some friends. So, in the spirit of making sure no one thinks I posted the above advice just to further my business...
The bus is a good option for being most inexpensive. Living here, I often use the bus to get into town on personal business. With $6 a gallon gas, using my tank for all my personal trips makes no economic sence. To Jaco, it is cheap but there are drawbacks, some of which Devo mentioned. Just wouldn't suggest trying it at night with a late(r) arrival at SJO.
You can do Interbus from a hotel close to the airport like the Holiday Inn. Not sure the latest departure or schedule in general. Jaco360 also does shared airport runs but again, not sure of the schedules. Problem here is a late/missed flight and now having to pay for the ride twice.
There are many good local drivers who have a verifiable presence in San Jose. The one I always recommend when I am booked is the old standby at Amistad, Alex Palma. The Sportsmen's Lodge van or OLD is another good option. CRT member recommendations like Dskreet also carry weight.
If you are desperate and can't find anything else, a REAL taxi will be expensive but one like the orange taxis which is a verifiable company with a verifiable driver. Those kind are 99.9% reliable IMHO for both safety and reliability for the car to actually get you there.
Saving the best for last, the Amistad shuttle is by far the best mix of reliable, inexpensive and comfortable. Only problem is getting into town before it leaves. Perhaps Matt can fill in the schedule/costs.
There are positives and negatives to each option and you need to decide which is best for YOU be it a vet that can make a perfectly good choice and get a $50 taxi or someone on the first visit. Flabuck is right, a taxi going back to Jaco would make sence but those are few and far between. And let me be clear, I am not coming down on Chili for finding a good deal. He is a LONG time vet and I would trust his decision/instincts. I only disagree that that option is right for everyone.
My basic point is, in general and in my opinion, you should always deal with a KNOWN quantity with transportation. You are putting your life, passport, credit cards, phones, computer and whatever else you have in the hands of that person. Be smart in your choices.
