A true CR newbie here, making my cherry post......... go easy on me guys

I did a short look around and noticed that some hotels have a "joiner" fee, which I assume is paid to the hotel each time a girl comes to the room (even to watch tv :D ).

Can someone point me to a thread/link which identifies which hotels have NO joiner fees and what the current/recent joiner fee per girl is for those hotels with a joiner fee.

My cherry trip is next month, and it's down to Sportsmen Lodge or Del Rey. I'm sure it's been discussed a million times, but I'd appreciate guidance as to which would help this newbie.

Many thanks

Bob

+1 on not staying at the DR, plus they have a chica fee but you'll be spending some time at thier bars. In SJ, you'll be playing in an app 3.4 sq mile area, probably at least your first trip. For no chica fees, the mentioned SL is an excellent choice but often is sold out; Amistad an equally very good choice, Mona Lisa a great special going on now for $49--tough to beat that; Dunn Inn; Castillo, Hotel Little Havana; Freebird (not really a hotel but good for the $). All have websites so check them out. Hope I haven't missed any of the other good ones.

Your head is going to be spinning so land in one of these and visit all the others so next time you stay where you think is the best for you.

If by joiner fee you mean gringo fee, then yes. There are hotels who have these type fee's.. I too would recomend you stay at the Sportsmen.
As far as you not knowing any spanish etc..that's not gonna matter to get ur pee pee wet. But could influence price, length of session, yadda-yadda.

Imagine being around chicas who will have sex with you but you can't chat them up or use your charm because you don't speak. There's a line of mongers like that out the door, and thus you will have a good time as just another spoke on the wheel. Have a good time..

You should read this post: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=16357

In there you'll find this:

Quote:
HOTEL ROOM- Before going to CR, you should reserve a hotel room. While you may be able to get a room at many places just walking up, you will be locked out of the more popular (& monger friendly) hotels. Some of them fill up months in advance. Make sure the hotel allows female "guests" if you're planning to bring girls back to your room. Some hotels do not allow working girls at all, others charge high fees per "guest".

Some of the monger and chica-friendly hotels include (incomplete list):
1. Sportsmen’s Lodge (SL) http://www.sportsmenscr.com (Preferred hotel of many CRT'ers; frat like atmosphere; large sports bar; lots of tv's (incl all PPV events-boxings, MMA, football); rooms range from $60-150/night (less CRT VIP discount); indy chicas work the bar from morning till closing; free breakfast is only fresh fruit and toast)
2. Hotel La Amistad http://www.hotelamistad.com (a block from Sportsmens; very nice hotel; rooms start at $69 (less CRT VIP discount); also a favorite of many CRT'ers; no chicas working on-site; free breakfast is good)
3. Hotel Del Rey (HDR or DR) http://www.hoteldelrey.com (bars in the hotel are where chicas can be found literally 24 hours/day, the rooms are pretty bad, uncomfortable, old, most would not recommend staying there-only visit the bars to pick up chicas, no CRT discount)
4. Hotel Little Havana (HLH), formerly Zona Blue (ZB) http://www.hotellittlehavana.com (owned/operated by CRT'er, hotel attached to massage parlor, or vice versa, recently opened, rooms start at $69/night (less CRT VIP discount), 2br suites available, quickly becoming a favorite)
5. Hotel Castillo http://www.hotelcastillo.biz (budget hotel; starts at $38/nt (w CRT VIP discount); very basic; free breakfast sucks)
6. Hotel Dunn Inn http://www.hoteldunninn.com (renovated rooms, start at about $70; new large sportsbar opened feb 2011; good food but pricey; CRT discount)
7. The Freebird Hotel http://www.thefreebirdcr.com (nice hotel close to 2nd ave; 2 blocks from HDR; most rooms share bathrooms; but has 2 suites; rooms start at about $40/night (CRT discount))
8. Hotel Morazan http://www.costaricamorazan.com (budget place $45-50/night; ok rooms-basic; reports of smoke smell; no CRT discount)
9. Nuevo Johnson (budget hotel @ $15/night) http://www.hotelnuevojohnson.com (very very basic, bad part of town, not recommended unless on very tight budget)

-There a several hotels that offer discounts to VIP members. Staying only a few nights will save you enough $$$ for another session. Of the ones listed above, #1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 offer a CRT discount. Also be advised that some hotels charge a “guest” fee (aka chica fee) to bring up a working girl to your room. It ranges from $10-25 per girl. In these hotels, you have to sign them with reception as you enter and they tack on the charges to your bill.

Chica fee hotels:
-Del Rey ($10)
-Sleep Inn (next to Del Rey) ($25)
-Holiday Inn ($80 )--they don't want guests bringing hookers in.
-Nuevo Johnson ($3-4)

No chica fee hotels:
-Sportsmens
-Amistad
-HLH
-Castillo
-Morazan
-Dunn Inn

Hotels that DO NOT WANT our kind of business include:
-Radison
-Hotel Grand Costa Rica-WORKING GIRLS NOT ALLOWED IN THE HOTEL AT ALL
-Holiday Inn-hence the $80 guest fee
-Balmoral
-Best Western
-Hotel Presidente (Prez)- No longer offering CRT discount. They have a dress code for chicas (no revealing clothing), and a 1 chica at a time rule. They don't want hookers in their hotel either.

Many thanks for the (initial) replies.

I've been leaning towards Sportsmen, and the helpful replies only reaffirm that inclination.

Follow-up question if I may. When I travel to asia (primarily the Phils), I have a separate mobile phone (paid under USD $20), with a local SIM/Number. What do punters do in the CR? Do punters use a separate phone & number? I assume the local phones are GSM based.

Is there any reason to buy a local phone and/or SIM? Do I also need prepaid "load" for the phone?

Again......... please go easy on me

Bob

Bring an "unlocked" phone, preferably 3g, and def not one that was Verizon, and you can buy a sim with minutes added and your own sms capable phone number in about 10 minutes for about $8-10 at the Kolbi kiosk just passed customs. Talk is cheap in CR, should last your entire trip. don't call home on it, 34 cents a minute.

Bob......

You say >>>>>> When I travel to asia (primarily the Phils), I have a separate mobile phone (paid under USD $20), with a local SIM/Number.

If you don't already have the kind of phone that will work in CR, you can do the same thing at the KOLBI kiosk at the airport in SJ that you do in the "Phils." The price is the same, $20, including 90 minutes of talk. Kolbi at the airport accepts dollars or colones. The same phone costs more outside of the airport.

For $20, you get a new, cheap, simple phone, and a new number, to keep for future trips. To keep the number alive (if you care to) , you need to recharge the SIM at least every 120 days. You can do the recharge on the internet, or somebody on the ground in CR can put $1 on the SIM for you.
