Lets face it....

The majority of the guys who are totally against tipping are not against it because it's not customary; it's because they're cheap fuckers.

Personally, I'll tip but I don't go crazy. I'm not trying to impress anybody or win anybody over. Here's how I handle it:

Taxis-depends on the ride. If the guy has a good attitude and maybe even engages me, I like that, so I'll leave the coins. If I get an anti-gringo vibe, he gets shit.
Maids-leave 1K daily minimum; if I make any requests such as extra towels or whatever, I'll leave an extra 1K
Bar-depends completely on the attitude and efficiency of the bartender; if she doesn't greet me, smile, or act friendly, or if I have to wait at the end of bar for 5 minutes as she's talking to her over-tipping gringo, no tip. He'll subsidize me I'm sure. :lol:
Restaurants-depends on the service. We all know good service. Assuming the bill is $60, I'll leave an extra 2-3k ($4-6) on top of the 10%.
Girls-I tip ONLY for good service, not for business fuggs. If you pay $50 at an MP, she gets about $25. If you tip 5k ($10)- my usual tip, that's 40%, but I don't look at percentages. I could care less what the percentage is. I know $10 will make a difference for them in relation to their "salary". I would be too embarrassed to tip 1-2k. And I don't appreciate or give into the demanding of "tips" by chicas. Homey don't play that... NEXT! I have never been forced into a tip. Ok, maybe once, but she has my dick deep in her ass so I was powerless :oops: . And I don't tip at all for mechanical fuggs. If hey ask for a tip, I tell them why I'm not giving them one in hopes that they will see the light. :idea: Doubtful! If they don't ask, I just leave or escort them out and don't say anything; I don't need to rub it in.
Door/security/reception-unless they do something extra to help me in some way, I don't tip doormen, security, or reception people.
Street-I don't give money to beggers. I have bought food on numerous occasions, but I don't give money.
Fast food-I never have nor would I ever tip a fast food employee anywhere.
Skycap/hotel bags-I'll tip only if I requested their services. A couple of months ago, I was leaving India and I had only a carry-on. As I get out of the taxi near the burn, this skycap runs over one of those passengers luggage carts (not the big one they usually use) and grabs my bag. I said no thank you, but he starts to roll towards the entrance. Fine. When he unloaded the bad at the counter he was pretty pissed that he didn't get shit. I told him, "I didn't ask for your help". He mumbled something and left.

This. Never have & never will tip a DR (or any other establishment's) bartender when they make you wait for your change.

I worked for years in the restaurant business, so I do tip well when I get good service.

I have heard from more than one bartender at the Sportsmen that they do not receive any of the 10% service charge. I think the lead bartender receives something extra, but I do not know what. I almost always tip 10-25% at the Sportsmen because I feel the service I receive there deserves something extra, and I know the tip goes directly to the bartenders. At other restaurants in the gulch, I usually tip 10% or a little more. At any restaurant, if I receive what I think is special service from a nice lady, I will always tip extra. I usually don't have the problem of being ignored that many people have complained about on here.

Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe they aren't being exactly honest with you in hopes of getting a bigger tip?

When I come down for my visits, I bring about 50 or more in singles. As we all know, 1k colones is apx 2$ and their 1$ coins weigh about 3 pounds each, so when I have to give tips that are small, I can give the 1$ instead of 2$. I keep all the change I get and always leave it for the maids every morning as well as the paper money.

If you don't read or speak Spanish, and you can't understand your bill, ask if your restaurant bill includes the tip, then decide if you want to add extra.

I have a couple of my favorite "bums" that I like to give a buck to now and then, "Shoe shine boy" and "Rudy" the black American guy who hangs out at the Del Rey, they'll hail taxis for you out the back door so you can avoid the overpriced tricksters that hang in the front.

I once hailed a cab at the same time a tico did, the tico beat me to the door and jumped in the back seat, the driver ordered him out with much fuss and cussin' in Spanish. It was my first visit here in 2003 and found out later ticos don't tip and he knew I would...

I usually tell the girls I tip $10 if I'm pleased and $20 if she makes me fall in love, I usually try to get them to stay for an hour and 1/2 instead of an hour, if they want to leave before the hour is up, no tip. I let them know the tip is not automatic. Sometimes if the performance is less than expected I inform them 1/2 way through they're losing their tip. On more than one occasion I've had a 180 turn around and a mediocre performer started going wild....

<Start Sarcasm>
Now! Mister Orange! Are you suggesting that those sweet little baristas would lie just for money? Shame sir, shame! Salt of the Earth, they are. Salt of the Earth!
<End Sarcasm>

Orange, do you have verifiable knowledge that they do receive the 10%? All the bartenders, except the very new ones, know my tipping habits. It would not benefit them to be dishonest with me. I am not saying they aren't dishonest about what they told me, just that it would not change the tip they receive. I tend to look on the brighter side of situations, rather than being suspicious of everything - makes life's journey more enjoyable.

Believe me they get whatever part of the 10 % they are to get as it is divided among all who worked . At the end of the night if the 10% was $ 100.00 and 6 girls worked each would get $ 16.66 . If I am wrong Bill please correct me. ( Maybe the cooks and others are included that could be true. ) This is not paid nightly but once per week for the shifts she worked. The cash tips are split in some form of division on a nightly basis. So if you had a $ 100 tab the 10 % would be $ 10.00 and it would be split 6 ways ( in this example ) so your waitress would get $ 1.66 of it . Maybe that is how she justifies her explanation.

You may be right, Herman, but I'd like someone like Bill to weigh in - is the service charge always split, say between the server(s), kitchen help, bus boys, etc, given in whole to the individual server, or kept in whole or part by the owner.

Is there any law or strong tradition - Sportsmans is a stand up place owned by a smart, savvy guy - while I'd be interested in what they do, I'm more interested in what the average place does - thanks!

I seriously doubt we'll find out what the 'average' places do. Personally I don't run a tab, but pay per drink, and round up the bill for each round. I don't want their coins anyway.
After a few drinks, the 'tip' starts to add up, and I feel ok with it.
