They're great for traveling, because they stay in your pants. But mongering has a requirement (typically) of being NOT in your pants, so I am wondering if a money belt is such a good idea when hitting MPs and the like.
What's more, they do not 'lock', so I would never leave one in the room with a chica whilst I wander off to the bathroom/shower.
Opinions / experience?

Money belts are well known by ladrones and other rippers. Let them get the drop on you and they will likely take your entire belt! Only carry the min. amount of money needed for each outing, and possibly a dummy wallet with some small $ and colones. Small pocket, slightly larger than a credit card, inside the waist band of your pants, close to fly, sewn in works well. Front pockets are best for cash of course, and less is always better, utilize your room safe, and be on your toes when ever inside an MP. Situational awareness is the key.

difficult to operate situational awareness when the inner voice is chanting "coño,coño,coño"!

Just take what you need, or what you honestly would not mind parting with.
If you break it down into daytime/evening as you will probably be back in your hotel to shower/change/rest then even better.

I basically carry my wallet with my debit, and 100$ at a time. Do I spend the 100$? Nah probably not. Would I have a heart attack I lost 100$? Nah probably not. If I know Im going somewhere specific, say a strip club and plan to do the deed, then I'll take a bit more or whatever I need, use a cab and go from there. But if your in the Del Rey there is really no reason to have more then 100$

Money belts just spell sucker IMHO.

I've travelled to and lived in many rough places as part of my former profession and my advice is as follows:

1. Only carry what you will spend on that outing.

2. Never carry debit cards unless you're going to an ATM and only go to ATMs in safe areas (shopping malls are best). A ladrone getting your debit card could be the start of an express robbery where you're taken at gunpoint to an ATM and cleaned out. At least you can cancel credit cards and dispute charges when those are stolen.

3. If I'm really in a hell hole I carry a dummy wallet with a few bucks and fake ID. I keep everything I want to keep split between two hidden wallets, one clipped inside my waistband and one strapped to my calf inside my pants. Worst case scenario I should have at least taxi money to get home.

4. It's also wise to leave the smartphone in the safe and just carry a cheap cell phone that you could easily part with if you are robbed.

NEVER RESIST A ROBBERY, you can get money and valuables back if they are taken but not your life.

I had an issue where I carried all I expected to spend, and came up majorly short when things heated up. Luck held out for me and at that precise stage, we transferred to my hotel, where the cash was. So no one knew how close disaster lurked.
