HLH and SL are both average/nice places by San Jose standards, but San Jose is nothing like *random city* USA. Costa Rica is a developing country, so you might be taken aback by the general conditions of the streets, structures, sidewalks, etc., the first time you roll into the neighborhoods where you'll be staying and hunting chicas. It took me about a day to acclimatize my first visit

Hey Travelmutt, thanks for the heads up and helpful information, but Im from India and have seen much harsher conditions. :)

On the contrary, are there any rentals near the gulch area such as houses, villas or even condos that anyone knows compared to staying at HLH, SL or a hotel? Does anyone have experience, if so please share.

Aha, forgive me ignorance in making assumptions. I'm unaware of the private rental market, maybe someone else has tried it and can comment.

Hello fellas,

The wait is over, have been counting down the past 2 months, Costa Rica is scheduled to take off this week!!! I will be there with a group of friends for my buddy's bachelor party...We have planned to stay at HLH from Sept 27-Oct1. Is anyone else going to be there the same time?
I wanted to ask you guys for any last minute advise...

What are THE top places to visit while in San Jose?? in terms of must do/visit: MP's (heard HLH is great, but others to consider), strip clubs, night life, food(We are all foodies-would love a great recommendation on must have foods)

I want to thank costaricaticas.com and the members for all of the help and support!

The only food recommendations I can make in Jaco are based on a trip I took about four years ago.

(1) Tsunami Sushi - ask the chef what is the freshest. They usually have something that just came off the boat. Everything was great.

(2) Poseidon Hotel - there is a restaurant upstairs. The tuna steak, medium rare was incredible.

Again, this was four years ago. Things can change in a heartbeat in CR but I would give both of those places a shot.

I'm sure both places are great, 'drive, but a little far to go for a meal - he's staying in San Jose, not Jaco

Nothing like waiting until the last possible second, huh Sancho, to ask that question   :P

I could give you some res't - but do this - the management at HLH is great; they can make all sorts of suggestions; you could do some day trips from San Jose, as well as make some res't recommendations (but fair warning - San Jose is by no means a "foodie" paradise)

Have a good trip :)

I would try and check out Le Grillon while I was down there if you want to see what the strip clubs are like, 10 dollar cover charge but it covers two drinks. I think its 36 bucks (18k colones) for a 20 min/half-hour session with any of the dancers and they normally have some pretty hot girls in there. Located on Calle 6 between 4th and 6th ave. Some taxi drivers may not know where it is. It is more of a late night place does not really get going to after 11pm. While over that way you will also be not to far from Pirate Club on Ave 10 and Calle 14. Cab it between these places as they are not the best areas especially late night.
