I called Sprint and they said my phone will work in San Jose as well as texting. They said it was in thier GSM network. Does anyone ever tried the service and does it work? Thanks in advance for the answers.

Sprint uses CDMA not GSM. For Costa Rica you need a GSM phone. However you may have a phone with both CDMA and GSM. For example, the Sprint iPhone is a "World" phone, it uses CDMA in the USA but also has GSM for use in other countries. You could even get the SIM slot unlocked and use a local prepaid SIM in another country.

I would research the exact model of phone you have to make sure it has GSM.

I have a HTC EVO 4g with Sprint---No service. I use Skype or email over the WiFi at the hotel.

That is what I got as well. Thanks, I'll deal with Sprint later as they said it would work.

I have a sprint gsm phone that works anytime I leave the US. The only drawback is the outrageous roaming charges so I use it to check voicemail, etc or skype.

Bring an unlocked 3G and buy a SIM card at the CR airport for $5 which includes plenty of minutes. Key is unlocked and 3G, 2g will work but not in more remote areas.
