Guess that is the issue---can't you be both :?:

places like Dunn, Amistad, sound a little too wild & crazy (i.e. noisy) and the area a bit much

So certainly want to see the area when I am there--but maybe not stay right in the area...(ya I know I'm a wimp)
P123 I don't follow your logic here, what is the main purpose of your trip? Is there a legimate reason for not wanting to stay in the gulch other than "you're a wimp"? If you don't have family or business to tend to then quit being wimpy and stay in the gulch. Even if you do you could probably get away with staying at the Presidente or Amistad and be withing walking distance of the action.

as above--both--legitimately I am an "outdoor guy" and really will be partaking in trips such as WW, zip, maybe an ATV or motorbike, perhaps kayaking....but also am a hobbyist--so can't really be going to such a hobby friendly place alone and not take advantage...

So yeah..want to get laid some...but won't be drinking to really late...some of those trips start awful early

but certainly a wealth of good opinion above (thanks to all)...I think I will take the advice...and roll the dice with one of the places---from what I have seen of the gulch places online--I leaning towards Amistad...

For those wishing to join Brother Don Rico in the wilderness (just spoofin'), here's the link to his mention: http://www.mybeaconescazu.com/

The Amistad and Presidente are probably the closest to being both. Unless we CRT'ers have finally driven them away, the Amistad still has a sizable number of eco-tourists staying there, typically on one-night stopovers. Yet, while it isn't like the HDR or SL, it is more chica-friendly than the Presidente. The Dunn Inn is another candidate, but it is opening a "casino con chcias", so it will soon be a mongers-only place like the SL. :D

The American-based chain hotels and all of the boutique places/B&B's around the Valley cater to the family and couples crowd, and do not allow chica "guests". There are actually not a whole lot of true mongering hotels in San Jose, even though prostitution is allowed, and most of them are in Gringo Gulch. This isn't Pattaya or Angeles City after all.

If I may comment on Brother HikerTom's remarks about the future of the Dunn Inn (and this is speculation on my part)--the lounge/casino/sportsbook will be reachable from the hotel only via corridor and unescorted working girls will still be essentially banned from the hotel bar/restaurant. The hotel will probably be 80-90% Our Crowd but expect some eco-tourist guests--at least til TripAdvisor.com gets a big volume of comments (that site does drive biz to or from venues cuz it's peer-review trusted). The point of that is one can stay at the Dunn Inn and not be auto-tagged as a monger into the near future. "Civilian" tourists come and go eccentrically depending on the economy--Our Crowd is a much more stable audience.
Also worthy of note as a close-in venue is the Hotel Balmoral:

Stayed at Hotel M last trip in October. CRT special 99.00 nite. I was happy with my time there.
I would stay there again. Rooms are quiet & nice and it's close to mall.
It's about $3.00 to the gulch

Stayed at LA last May for a long weekend and it is great. For the most part you would not even know that mongering was taking place if you were not in the know. It is definitely not as obvious as say SL or HDR, but absolutely no hassles from staff. Staff is great, bar was fair priced and a welcome reprieve from the craziness, and the food/service was better then you get at most 3-4 star hotels in the states. If you check out trip adviser it may give you a good perspective.
