Arrived in CR yesterday afternoon. Couple of quick observations

1. I didn’t find a banco de San Jose branch at the airport. I exited the airport, walked across the street to the garage, walked up and found the overpass leading to the departing gates, but I never saw a bank branch. I did see an ATM housed within a small glass room. Is that to what everyone is referring?

2. You guys were right about the driving in this country. The taxi ride from the airport was “exciting.” Also, I made the mistake of letting one of guys who kind of looked like a sky cap get me taxi. He had an official looking uniform and clip board and a walkie talkie, so I assumed it he was in some official capacity. The car the called was a plain white sedan with no markings and no meter. The price was the same as everyone else I suspect ($25), but I was a little nervous. Then I saw how traffic works over here and I found something else to worry about.

3. The courtyard rooms at the SL are really adjacent to the bar, so it’s super noisy. There’s basically a party 13 hour party from 11am to 12am. Had I known that, I would have taken a room in another area of the hotel. The room is decent though.

Day 1 - I was able to make it in and out of the SL without succumbing to temptation (of which there was plenty). After getting some food I went out to the Del Rey. Not quite what I expected. I’ve never seen a bar/casino setup like that. I ended up playing poker for several hours. Their room is nice, big comfy executive chairs for the players, and the table felt looked brand new. One odd spot, they didn’t have auto-shufflers at the table, the had an extra dealer in seat one shuffling after each hand. I wonder why they do that, it wastes a playing spot.

Around 2:30am I decided I was done with letting the dealer bad beat me into submission (fun game though). I finally decided to activity check out the chica scene. There were still lots of girls even at that hour. It was a little challenging to check out the scene without accidentally making eye contact and inadvertently starting an interview However, my gut was registering a jaded vibe from more than 90% of them. One of them was even SUPER aggressive. She interrupted a order I was trying to place with the bartender and asked me what I was doing. I told her having a drink. She asked what else. I said nothing right now. She said, no we go now. I reiterated, no, I’m not going anywhere right now, and she practically yelled “No, we go now!” I think not.

By 3:00am I was a little drunk and very tired and about to give up and just settle with the hottest looking hard core pro available. Then, while standing by the black jack tables, I spied a gorgeous little girl walking to the bar with a friend. She had long back hair below the waist and a very pretty face. I wasn’t getting the same vibe from her at all. I walked after them to get a better look, but lost them before I could catch up. However, the Blue Marlin isn’t that big, so ended up passing them again. This time I definitely made eye contact. They came over and introduced themselves. The friend of the girl in whom I was interested started the conversation as I think her English was better. Eventually I got it across that I was interested in her friend. *Rookie move alert*. I couldn’t think of a tactful way of negotiating anything, I basically asked what was next. The girl said “vamos.” So we caught a cab back to SL without talking price, what was going to be involved, nothing. I KNEW that I was supposed to be asking all these questions, but for some reason couldn’t articulate. Finally, in the room I asked quanto. She replied cien por an hora. I didn’t bother to negotiate, since if I was going to do that I should have done it back in the bar.

I think I got lucky here folks. This girl was super sweet and down for whatever. I’m taking cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, missionary, doggy, seated, all over the bed, multiple bj sin condom and a 69. Eventually I was worn out after about 40 minutes of playing around. Even after all that, she said there was still 20 minutes left, so we cuddled up on the bed watching Spanish MTV, had a beer, and talked about her and her life through her broken English and my broken Spanish. (23, from Nicaragua, 22 month old daughter.) Very pleasant experience. I’m wondering if I’ve just been spoiled for future ladies or if I can expect more of the same if I trust my gut when I’m doing the interview.

Well, it’s day 2 now and I’m off to quepos in a couple hours. After that I’ll visit Jaco and then return to SJ for a couple days. Thanks for all the advise thus far. Wish me luck for the rest of the stay.

Nice first report newbie. This upcoming trip for me will be my 9th in two years and i have had far more good experiences to bad. For every six or seven great to good sessions I might get one not so good....not bad just not what i would say good....and maybe one out 25 or so that was straight up bad! Maybe I'm easy to please but i think if you scout out the talent and treat the girls with respect and not an ass to them you will have a great time. I'm not saying let them take advantage of you when i say treat them with respect, i have seen too many examples of guys being real assholes to the ticas because they can treat a really hot girl half their age the same way most bitches in the USA act towards us back home.

Just remember if you have a bad experience just shake it off and get back in the box and swing away! :P :P :D

FYI - After awhile if you spend enough time at the HDR even the girls you haven't been with will know all about you and what you like and don't like and how you treat them during your session....These girls run in little groups that talk to each other about us gringos so after a few sessions most girls will know what to expect when leaving with you.

You may want to ask Admin 1 if he could move this to the trip report section. Nicas are usually pretty good. I have had much success with them and so have many others. Funny, this is where the clock watcher gave you a benny. Most just up and go.

And I may be reading more into it than is there, but I do believe they consider the basis of the lies to be justified."

Not to counteract Brother Dean's suggested Thread move but I find it fine here. It's a quality report that other newbies will more likely come across, and be helpful to them and help soothe any 1st time fears.
Bottom line: read and absorb all you can but don't be afraid of any of the inevitable overpayments and other minor errors--you'll learn by experience and none are fatal errors (and certainly none the Old Sweats haven't made in their rookie days--I most definitely include myself). Keep your neck on a 360 swivel on the street, don't carry much cash, take taxis everywhere after dark and almost all day Sundays, keep your valuables most def' including your passport locked up in your room safe--the failure to follow these simple rules will cause you 99 +% of your troubles. Anything else may cause some embarrassment but aren't fatal. Have I forgotten anything?

For future reference, when you get into the departure area, turn right and walk all the way to the end. There are two teller windows there, I think it's a BCR branch. It's just past where you pay your departure tax.
Although a lot of the ladies are hustlers, there are many who try to be very decent people. Sounds like you found a good example of each. I discourage anyone from paying cien; but if you had a good time and you are happy, then you didn't pay too much. Just be careful the next time you're in the HDR. As has been mentioned, the ladies have a very good network and they may have you pegged as a cien guy. That network can also work to your advantage - if you treat the lady nice, that word also gets around.

Brother Jazzbo, a question: Taking taxis at night is of course, good advice, but why all day Sundays? This is the first time I have heard that. I've walked around everywhere in the gulch on Sundays during the day with no problems, but I need to know if I'm being stupid doing this. Thanks.

TravMutt,
Sounds like it worked out fine. I'll throw my 2 cents in...

The part of not talking about money is something I have done many times. Has never backfired on me, maybe I am just lucky. BUT, I never did that on my first 10 trips, let alone my first trip. Good for you.

One thing I always did when I have a nice girl (sounds like you do when she said you still have 20min  ), I order food for her and I. These chicas are ALWAYS hungry. After your done and cleaned up, order $12 worth of food and just chill. It has worked like a charm in my experience. If she says "no, I need to go", fine, if she stays, you will get to know each other much better (amazing how a plate of Club Sandwich and Fries con cervesa gets you closer to them than sex!)

If you are a newbie, everyone in SL, HDR, etc. knows it. These girls talk, ALOT! "He was nice, he is honest, he isn't a perv, he fed me, his is O.K.".

Scores points for you bro. Maybe not this trip, but down the road it will. AND YOU WILL BE BACK, TRUST ME!

Hi all.

I don't have a problem w/ the thread being moved. However, I won't be able to update it.

I may have mis-represented the clock-watching aspect. She didn't actually acknowledge that I had 20 min left, she just stayed with me through the hour. I later noticed that she'd stayed roughly one hour total, and I knew when we stopped, so I put two and two together. Not really important, but I wouldn't call her a clock watcher.

Interesting idea about ordering food afterwards, but it was already about 4am, so there really wasn't anything to order.

I'm in manuel antonio right now, headed to Jaco manana. I'll let u know how it goes.

That was a little bit obscure Brother Jawanker, but the way I read it here (and it seems logical) is that on Sundays, all the "decent folk" are either in church or with their families, leaving nobody but you and the roaming bad actors on the street. Certainly not a "must" like night-time taxis but worthy of consideration/ traveling with Brothers/ keeping a heightened awareness of surroundings. Not trying to spread the FUD Factor but knowledge is power...
