First off thank goodness for CRT.com. Being a newbie, here at least, there isn't much more important then a web forum like this. I visited CR some 20 odd years ago and don't really remember much as I was on business and didn't really get out. I do remember the desk man at the HI telling me not to go into the park after dark. Seems I wanted to go to a bar accross the way. Regardless, having perused the newbie sections I see that crime hasn't gotten any better. I have been visiting thailand for my monger the past five years. I was hoping to visist CR as I will be on a limited calendar this year. Here are my questions. Are there any particular areas that are safer for foot travel after dark, say from bar to hotel? Would it be correct to think that Central Avenue is the place to concentrate one's activities during the evening and later hours? I also have a question about the hotel El Maragato. How do you rate this facility? tica friendly? I haven't found anything in here yet as to this hotel. And lastly how is the area around the Freebird hotel, with regards to safety? Thanks much and hope to post something after my trip.

MG,

Im not familiar with Hotel Maragato at all. A word of advice though staying at the right hotel is a key ingredient to putting together a great trip. With that said I strongly recommend you trying to stay at the Sportsman's Lodge where there will be plenty of CRT guys around to help point you in the right direction and to offer advice to help you get the most out of your trip.

There exists several condos in La Uruca that you can rent for a week or so. You may find the rates comparable to the downtown hotels. Also, the taxis are reasonable.
