HDR has two ATMs in the lobby/casino area. The one near the elevator spits out Colones. The one near the front desk, Dollars. Fair exchange rate. The Colonial Casino next door has a good ATM in the back of the casino for Colones. I have found these ATMs to be very convenient for me. Inside and secure (if there is such a thing in S.J. :? )

Most banks have ATMs which will give you your choice of Colones or Dollars. Banks are likely to have the best exchange rate but unless you are getting a small fortune in cash, I wouldn't sweat it too much.

I would not recommend using outside ATMs after dark.

If you want to trade Dollars for Colone, a bank would be your best bet. Take your passport.

If you have to exchange money at the airport DO NOTuse the currency exchange booth in the baggage claim area. DO use the bank on the departure level. If you have a debit card you can use any of the ATM machines at the airport to get colones and avoid the hassle of going to the second floor and using the bank.

If you do not have to exchange at the airport wait until you get into town and use any bank.

I exchanged money yesterday at the airport BAC bank on the departure level (upstairs) at 552¢ per dollar. Make sure you bring your passport. I left mine with my woman downstairs, but luckily I had an old laminated copy which she hesitantly accepted.

That wouldn't be the the old toothless woman who is always outside panhandling, would it? I'll have to have a talk with her. She said that I was her "principe". :?
