I am posting this in the newbie's section, because, the necessity for me to ask the question makes me feel like a newbie. On my previous trips, I have only brought a little cash, in small bills, and relied on atm's for the remainder. This time I decided to save myself a few transaction fees and bring the bulk of my cash with me. I withdrew $2000 from my bank, and didn't think to require small bills. Now, I know where to exchange my money, but I started to get worried that the banks might have a problem accepting $100 bills. I exchanged about $300 in smaller bills yesterday at the bank in the INS building (great rate, by the way 547:1), but I wasn't sure if they will take large bills. Suggestions please.

Yes but no CB serial #s and the bills should be in good condition- untorn and unmarked.

Many of the older style $100 bills had serial numbers that began with "CB." It was my understanding that the Colombians were counterfeiting this style of bill, thus making banks and other establishments reluctant to accept them. If you have the new style, new bills.....you should have no problem.

Were they the "old style" bills beginning with "CB?"

I've never used an ATM in CR. I bring straight cash everytime and have never had a problem.

I guess if there are a few mixed in that they won’t take you can always use the ATM to top off and bring them home. I personally would bring some 50s 20sand 10s. DR girls aren’t going to give you change. If you negotiate 60 or 80 it will be a good idea to have exact change. Of course you can exchange all the 100s. But that is kind of pointless when the girls all seem to want dollars.
