You might want to send a PM to Thirdworld. He lives there and I think he mentioned that he has some sort of connection to a surf shop but not real sure of that.

Well, from time to time, they hold World class surfing competitions in Jaco. So what do you think?

Yes, it's good. I don't know if it changes with the seasons though.

All of those beach towns have water problems--they all dump into the ocean and it's worse if they are near rivers because that's all of the same stuff, plus agricultural run off, plus whatever else from up land going into the surf, Quepos- Manuel Antonio being an example.

There are only two major water treatment facilities in the whole country and neither are near the coasts.

Ironic about the int'l image of CR being this eco heaven. Major problem for CR.

But, Chicago closed its beaches app 10x last summer from high fecal count for which they blame Milwaukee, and has sued Milwaukee in Federal Court, who has undersized treatment facilities and dumps in the lake after a heavy rain.

Still, wouldn't you like to go on vacation to a nice beach and not worry about that?

I have had some good rides at Playa Hermosa. Very close to Jaco. Maybe I will join you in Feb. Playa Dominical is great for surfing as well, but no pros.

Welcome Mrcold. I am a surfer, and have been surfing about 10 times in Costa Rica, with my first trip taking place when I was in my mid 30's.

As far as the quality of the waves goes I would rank the main surfing beach in the following order: 1. Nosara 2. Tamarindo 3. Jaco. This ranking is based both on the quality of the waves and the crowds. Nosara is awesome, the five times I have been there it has been nothing but consistent large waves and small crowds.

Here is the problem, the availability of ladies is definitely in the exact opposite order. The availabilty of ladies in Nosara is just about non-existent. At your age you might be able to score with a non-pro, but there would be no guarantee. I have always been able to find company in Tamarindo, but the quanity is small, so you have to move fast and be a little less picky. There are plenty of ladies in Jaco.

So, it all depends on what you are looking for. A few of my friends are really serious about surfing and spend their entire stay in Nosara. I visit for a few days, but then go stir crazy and head to Jaco. The quality of surfing takes a huge drop, but the ladies more than make up for it. As someone already posted, Hermosa is close and has better waves and less crowds than Jaco.

It is probably not smart, but I don't worry too much about the water quality. With all the stupid things I do in my life, spending a few hours in the waters of Costa Rica is low risk in comparison. Please pm me if you have any questions.
