To get the highest exchange rates (518-521), you need to wait in line (for like 20-30 minutes) at a bank.
Downtown bank sure but I've never seen a long line at the airport BAC.

(FYI-Colonial casino may give you a good exchange rate too, not sure)

Exchange rate at the Colonial this past week was 515 to 1.

At an exchange rate of 500 CRC to 1 USD 5 colones makes a penny. You won't find me standing in line at a bank for 15 minutes to gain an extra 5 bucks on a $500 exchange. My time is more valuable. :D

Accepting 500 to 1 instead of the 517 (as of today) rate is a 3.4% difference. If you drop by a bank mid morning they are usually not crowded. Lunchtime and afternoons are always busy.

Most hotels or casinos should offer a decent rate (except for the DelRey)

It isn't the best rate but not the worst. Much better than the baggage area at the airport.

Most private banks (Scotia, BAC San Jose, Proamerica, etc.) have an exchange rate better than Banco National and as good or usually better than Banco de Costa Rica. They rarely have long lines.

Some rates today:

Banco National..............515.50
Banco de Costa Rica.....516.50
Cuscatlan......................517.00
Scotia............................517.25
BAC San Jose................517.50
Promerica......................517.50

use a private bank. usually no long line and a better rate.

When in CR I try to pay in colones at the 500:1 rate when quoted in USD. For example on my last trip I hailed a cab outside the Hemingway/Castillo to get to the airport. I asked the driver how much before I got into the car and he said "$16" When we got to the airport I handed him 8,000 colones and he was happy. I have conducted transactions this way multiple times and nearly always, if not always, the Colones are accepted at the 500:1 rate.
