I am planning my first trip to Costa Rica the end of this month. However, I have a few last minute concerns. First I don’t have a wingman and will be traveling alone. How safe is it to travel alone by taxi from the airport to my motel? In addition, how safe is it to take taxis to the various venues at night alone? Is it safe to walk around during the day alone as long as you have your writs about you? I am also curious about the age range of the gringos I will hopefully be associating with at the bars and making new friends with, so I wont be traveling alone. Does US customs usually give us a hard time when returning to the US? I know I have a lot of questions, but any help is greatly appreciated. I also look forward to posting my first trip report when I return.

Taking a Taxi from the airport is safe. Not sure where you are staying but expect the cost to be $18. Or you can book Interbus on line(Interbus.com)for $6.00

Much has been written on taxi's in SJ, generally safe, Taxis-sit front or back, doesn't matter. Pay in colones. Use taxis with working meter (pronounced "maria"), otherwise be prepared to get ripped off. They may have a meter but not turn it on. Just say "Pon la maria por favor" (Put on the meter please). Also, do not take the taxis parked outside of a hotel, strip club, mp, unless they have a working meter and USE it. They usually have a meter but won't turn it on then ask for 3X or 10X the rate. Somebody was quoted 5,000¢ for a ride that costs 500¢. In the city, take the red taxis with the yellow triangle on the door. From the airport, take the orange airport taxis.

Walking around- I walk many kilos while in SJ. As my research area expands with each trip, I have yet to encounter any problems during the day. Walking Ave Central from the Presidente to El Mercado is a nice morning stroll, pickup some souveniers and fresh fruit at the Market. As a new person I would stay on main avenues and not venture to far off the beaten path until you get familiar with the neighborhoods.

Age- You will find pretty much what Olneymm stated. Do yourself a favor and head to SL, usually a few CRT'ers hanging at the bar, you may find an accomadating wingman. Post a Roll Call and try to meet up with others that may be in town.

Obviously, I don't care about you using my "work". I was busting your balls, because it's easy and fun. But seriously, I will show you how to quote another person.

OK, pay attention newbie ... I'll break down one way to do this for you. Maybe somebody else can learn from it too.

The only difference is that you have to use square brackets [ ] instead of the rounded ones. To be able to show you the actual text, I had to use different brackets..

To use the quote function or other functions such as bold, underline, etc.:

1. Hi-light and copy the desired text from others words.
2. Use the Post Reply button.
3. Use the paste function to post words copied into new Post Reply window.
4. Again, hi-light the text to have quoted.
5. After hi-lighting the text again hit the quote button, or other choice(s), from below the Subject line. Note: if you choose to use more than one function, you must again hi-light the text for each function.

If you choose to use the bold, underline, etc. functions of your own words, hi-light the selection for your words, in the Post Reply window, and use the applicable function button above.

There may be other ways to use this function, maybe some of the vet's can simplify it. It took me a while to figure this out on my own, so there may be other ways of doing it.

If you are outgoing you can make friends at the rail at the News Cafe in the Hotel Presidente and at the bar in the Sportsman's Lodge and possibly find a wingman for the day or night. Like: "Let's walk to the Zona Blue for a daytime quickie or look around." "Join me for dinner starting at Idem"

When returning to the US I have had no problems. But I often make friends with couples or others in line and talk with them before I approach the booth. It looks like I am with a group. Maybe what I need is a big Cafe Britt bag which screams tourist.
