There is no "charge" at the banks to exchange currency, you get the current rate that bank is offering. Upon entry at the airport if you go back up to the departure area there is a bank to the right that gives the best rate, or a bank downtown is good but like you say you might stand in line for a while. The front desk at the Hotel Pres. is usually only 5 colones below bank rate and some casinos offer good rates.(not the HDR from what I hear)

Yo will have a choice as to which currecny you wish to receive.

HolaB.

Where did you find ATM's that dispense any denomination other than multiples of USD$20.00 and/or 10K colones? :?

Aside from the Colonial, where one can get any denomination (including coins) from the main casino cashier, I have never encountered an ATM in C.R. that dispenses smaller denomination bills.

Sorry to ring in late on this subject but missed it the first time it was around.

There are no 20K colones note in circulation. The ATM's I use Red Total ( @ BAC-San Jose/Scotia Bank/AM-PM stores, etc) & the Banco Interfin (soon to be Scotia) all dispense colones in 1/2/5 or 10K denominations. I have never received anything but $20 bills in US currency.

Thanks for that tip on B of A. That's totally ridiculous. No ATM's for me. I'll stick with my hotel.
