I have a Canon A75. It was replaced last year by the A510. Great all around camera. I paid $200 at Wal-Mart in 2004. The A510 is only about $150.

It's a little bigger than some like but for my purposes and the price at the time it was just right.

Before I bought my camera I did my research on the site that Wit posted.

Wound up buying a Canon A95 power shot, case & 512 memory card from Amazon.com. $329.00 total including shipping. Very happy with the camera.

Do your research and you should wind up with the camera that is right for you

Search the web for what you want! features etc , etc,

then check Ebay also. I was able to replace my $250 camera for under a $100.

If you want small but very effective photos this one has a great flash for it's size which is important in dark situations.

Funny that I just bought one yesterday. It's a Kodak C340 and it has many nice features, including a 2 and 10 second timer, various Flash settings, and best of all, you can make "Videos" with it!
Price wise, it may be more for you because I bought it at the local Mililtary Post Exchange where there's no tax and we buy at about a 15-20% savings.
Also, the camera came with an instant $40.00 rebate. The selling price was $239.00, minus the $40 rebate, I got it for $199.00.
It's small enough to fit in the p;alm of your hand and works off two AA batteries (included). You also get the USB cable to upload into your computer. It's a very Nnice deal I think!
I'm sure if you check "www.kodak.com" you'll find it. Kpdak C340.
HOWEVER... if you want, I can get one for you at that prize and either ship it to you or give it to you on Saturday the 4th at the SL HH...
I'd be glad to help a CRT brother and I'm sure you would not be disappointed with it.
Good luck.

I now own a Canon SD500 Digital Elph. Compact, includes software programs, usb cable, battery charger, and SD card (32K?). I have owned several Canon Digital cameras and have continued to use the same software (zoombroozer) in my computer. I have owned A60, A70, A80, A85, and A90 before buying this one. The others have been given away to my K*ds and coworkers. This is a great "point and shoot". User friendly. While not the cheapest, it works for me. For a less expensive camera, I would highly recommend any of the other Canon A series. You just can't go wrong with their cameras.

I recommend the Canon A510 $160 to $200
See - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canona510/

the Canon A520 $180 to $200.
see- http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canona520/

the Canon SD400 $300.

Especially the SD400 because of its size. The review is glowing.
I use the discontinued S500 which is nearly equal but uses the bigger Compact Flash card and I verify it is outstanding.

Size is critical if you will be carring it around.

I have bought my last 2 digital cameras on Ebay. Make sure it is BRAND NEW because there are some who sell refurbished, open-box, and used. I would not recommend any of these when it comes to electronics. Some people like them, so as always to each his own.

I have a Fuji 2650. I've had it for about 2 years now. It's pretty cheap, under $100 brand new. I like it, it does the job.

It's 2.0 megapixel, enough for me. These days, you can get a 4.0 megapixel camera for about $200. But for me (recreational photography) it's too many pixels. 2.0 is sufficient for my needs.

Here's a 4mp Canon for $190 (incl shipping):

I have to add my vote to Canon.

If you are just using it for travel point and shoot, A510, A520 will do the job.

3 mp is good enough for normal photo print out. If you do a lot of enlarging say to the size of 8x11 legal size print out, then go for 4 mp or more.

the SD series are great, if you insist on smaller compact size. Try it out at the store, the SD series may be too small for big hands and fingers. I have used pentax, fuji, and sony and canon. At present I am using canon A 510 as my travel point and shoot. It's been working well on all my 2005/6 CR trips.

Here are a couple links to digi camera review sites, canon gets rather good remarks so far. For the $, the A series are pretty good.

Ace, that is one piece of good gear.

Compared to their newer SD series, the s300-500 are built like mini tanks, where as their newer ones are more plasticky . I still have my s230, and it still works fine, except in indoor, low lighting snap shot moments, where the newer canon reacts much faster.

Koko...
I should've pointed out that the Kodak has 5 Mega Pixels. I think for $199.00 that is a much better deal even if you don't need for everyday usage. However, the advantage of being able to make Videos makes it a real bargain.
Again, it's your call. I can get it for you tax free and bring it with me or ship it to you in the States.

This one is a little over your budget but I just bought the Canon DS550. It's a brand new model. It's 7.1 MegaPixel and very..very..compact. You CANNOT go wrong with Canon. It retails for about $460.00. I just bought it through Amazon.com and my total cost came to $404.00.
