I use Awaketel.

http://www.awaketel.com/tendollars.html

No cards necessary. I use a mobile phone and call to another mobile phone. It's 15cents/min from the US to Costa Rica - pretty cheap.

The link above will give you $10 in free calls - that's over an hour gratis.

skype.com is great. I use the free service a lot. Does anyone have experience using the pay service that gives you a number that people can use to call you at your computer? I've heard mixed reviews about this, but am considering giving it a try. There's also Skype Out. With it you buy X number of minutes that you can use to call land-based phones from your computer. I believe the rates to the US are about two cents a minute, but again I just read that and haven't tried it.

Yahoo Messenger has free voice service that's also pretty good. In my experience Skype is better, but there have been times when the Skype connection was a little blurry but the Yahoo one worked fine.

And to repeat what Right Hand Man said, these are no strings attached absolutley free internet services that allow you to talk to anybody else who has also opened a free account with Skype or Yahoo, and who has a $20 radio shack microphone-headset to plug into their computer.

You guys need to look at all the fine print with these cards. The best deal that I have found is the one offered here as a CRT discount though Tel3. I have lots and lots of dollars worth of phone cards under my belt and found this one to be the best all around deal. If Admin is able to track my purchases, he can surely verify!! Use the Tel3, first time charge to the card you get an extra $5.

Merry Christmas boys.

If you live in the south and have Harris Teeter grocery stores , You should try thier card. They have a card for $4.99 and one for $19.99. I buy the latter and have always gotten great minutes on my calls to Costa Rica. However, my calls to Nicaragua were much more. I have tried numerous calling cards and found most of them to be a rip-off. Even the wal-mart cards don't compare to the ones at Harris Teeter. The customer service # is 1-800-749-9438. 8)

Bookie,

I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine who lives in Cartegena. The number I called was a Houston phone #, but he was on the beach in Cartegena, his call forwarded by his paid SkypeOut service to his cell phone.

The pay services (SkypeIn or SkypeOut) is great. The person calling you has no idea that you're not in the states and are charged no more for the call than they would be if they were calling a regular land line or cell phone. Skype charges your account for forwarding the call to whatever phone you want. For example, your boss, novia, wife or anyone calls your local number in the states (which is your Skype number) and gets connected, just as if you were at home. What they don't know is that the call was routed by Skype to the forwarding number you set into your Skype account. Your computer at home does not have to be on to have this accomplished. So calls to the foreign number you've forwarded to - foreign cell phone, or hotel , or casa - cost you only whatever the rate is for the destination of your call (cost per minute including tax to a Columbian cell phone is approx. $0.10, and to a Cali, Bogota or Barranguilla land line it's $0.05; to Costa Rica cell phone is $0.09 and to a land line is $0.07)

More expensive than a calling card call, but very convenient for the caller. Of course if you're in CR with your computer, and try to call a land line in the USA, the cost is only $0.024, tax included. You just recharge your account online with a credit card every so often to make sure you've got enough credit for the calls, otherwise the calls go into your voice mail, instead of being connected.

Hope this helps. I find the technology facinating.

MJay

I use Vonage which is voice over IP. It costs about 8 cents a minute to call CR at anytime during the day.

Soon you'll be able to use your SKYPE account with a mobile phone in hotspots like the Hotel Presidente:

Press Release Detail
NETGEAR, Skype to Connect on Family of Innovative Products Including World’s First Skype WiFi Mobile Phone
Companies Debut Skype Wireless Mobile Phone at Consumer Electronics Show
LAS VEGAS — January 4, 2006 — NETGEAR®, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking products, and Skype®, the global Internet communications company, today announced they are working on a family of innovative new products, including the world’s first Skype wireless mobile telephone and a router equipped to optimize Skype.

The NETGEAR WiFi phone will make mobile Internet telephony a reality for Skype users. Unlike other devices that must connect with a PC, NETGEAR’s Skype WiFi phone will work wherever a consumer is connected to a wireless Internet access point — be that in a home, office, cafe, open public hotspot, or any open municipal wireless access point being deployed worldwide. The Skype experience remains the same, in that users can make free domestic and international calls, as well as host conference calls and chat, with other Skype users anywhere in the world, and to non-Skype users for a small fee. With this device, headphones or USB phones plugged into a laptop or PC are not required.

“Customers can now call anyone on Skype, anywhere in the world for free without using a PC anytime they are connected to WiFi. We’re extremely proud to deliver the world’s first mobile phone enabling customers to enjoy all the benefits of Skype,” said Patrick Lo, NETGEAR’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Moreover, Skype integration with our RangeMax wireless router will further extend our leadership in innovative networking devices. Skype offers the simplicity, WiFi offers the connectivity, and NETGEAR offers the technology to innovate these market-changing products. Our teamwork with Skype is yet another way that NETGEAR is helping people to connect, all around the world.”

An October report from Jupiter Research forecasts that by 2010, 20.4 million U.S. households will subscribe to some form of Internet-based broadband phone service, while In-Stat holds that widespread adoption of Internet calling in both the business and consumer markets depends on the availability of compatible wireless handsets (August 2005 report).

The NETGEAR device will combine the best of Internet calling and wireless. The NETGEAR phone is pre-loaded with Skype’s software, ready out-of-the-box to use with a wireless network. All a user needs to do after turning on the phone is enter a Skype username and password. The Skype software pulls up the user’s full contact list, displays the connection status on the phone screen, and allows the consumer to connect to any other Skype user for free. The phone will also allow users to connect to non-Skype users with the SkypeOut™ feature. More information on NETGEAR’s Skype WiFi phone, including pricing and availability, is planned for the first quarter of 2006.

“By collaborating with NETGEAR, Skype’s reach is extended to a new, important consumer platform. This new phone allows Skype to offer its global users improved mobility,” said James Bilefield, vice president of business development for Skype. “Simplicity and style were two qualities we looked for in a mobile phone and NETGEAR’s new device will offer both to Skype users.”

In addition to the Skype Wifi phone, NETGEAR and Skype also announced that the NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router (WPN824) with Smart MIMO technology, a 2006 CES Innovations Design and Engineering Award honoree and the industry’s #1 selling MIMO-G product, will be equipped to optimize Skype. Adapting to changing wireless conditions is unique to NETGEAR’s RangeMax technology, and RangeMax routers dynamically avoid interference from neighboring wireless networks and eliminate dead spots to maintain the most reliable, high-performance, long-range network connections to each client, making them ideal for supporting applications such as Skype.

NETGEAR and Skype are participating in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) at the Las Vegas Convention Center through January 8. During CES NETGEAR will demonstrate the new WiFi Skype phone in Booth #36219 in the South Hall 4. Skype will be present in the eBay/Skype kiosk (A129) in the Grand Lobby of the Central Hall.
