1 - Always have a copy of Prolijo's or some similar map with you if you're new to SJ. Taxi drivers are unbelievably ignorant about their city. frighteningly so.

2 - Always have small bills with you. Even if you forget or don't bother to tell the taxi driver to put the meter on mil colonnes will take you anywhere you want to go inside of Paseo Colon and 40th. Any arguments, throw him the mil colonnes and get out of the cab. Also, if you only plan to make small purchases then it's safer not to carry big bills.

3- Nothing is less interesting to a tica than a loud, grabby drunk. I must have had at least 8-10 girls tell me this, and they tell me it's the most common complaint of the girls there.

4 - kindness and respect will take you to places that dollars alone won't go to.

5 - As in most places, listening is more important than talking.

6 - Costa Del Sol is never open, and their Chicken Parmesan is a fable perpetuated by a fascist government.

7 - The gentlemen of CRT were, in fact, for the most part, gentlemen, and a pleasure to associate with.

8 - fake Cohibas are made with banana leaves in CR too.

9 - 100 colonnes will get you a private dance from Psychman.

10 - There can be value in the pretense of ignorance.

This is what it's all about. But, it's unfortunate that there are still many "Ugly Americans" who just don't get it. :?

Good stuff K_by_me!

I don't understand why gringos act poorly. Visiting a beautiful country....being dropped in a gentleman’s candy land...how can anyone not be happy and act right.

On my first visit to CR all the locals, hotels staff and fellow CRT members were great. Everyone I met responded well to a smile. I can't think of one bad experience (ok...maybe being cussed by the homeless beggars between the Prez and the DR. They like to bother you when you are taking that walk with your someone special back to the room).

I found service with a smile everywhere I took my greenbacks. Even with my limited Spanish I never had a problem. Cab drivers were great also. One even helped me get a great seat to the World Cup Soccer game. Some how I ended up with a cover skybox seat in the box right next to Miss Costa Rica. It rained all night so having a covered seat was like hitting a jackpot.

Now my Spanish is getting better. I am looking forward to my upcoming visit. I plan to practice good manners and bring that smile with me. I smile just thinking about my experience and in the fact of knowing the upcoming trip will be even better.

Thanks Gman, Tman, Murf and the other guys that help make my first trip so memorable!!!!

I think it's true that the small things matter. I watched girls go with other guys who were offering less than the offensive, noisy drunk. Like anything else, working in a nice environment with good people lets you relax and enjoy your work more, and when you enjoy your work you do a better job. of course, it's all relative, but I still think the point is valid.

If you translate the work into an office job it's the difference between working with co-workers who have become friends, and that you go for beers with, as opposed to working with with the boss's loudmouthed son-in-law that you must suffer through in silence. Given a voluntary choice why wouldn't you pick the people you like, even for a little less money? An enjoyable shared evening at 20 bucks less is worth the price for not having to put up with the bullshit, IMHO.

K_By_ Me..Just found this post, and some nice lessons. For the Record, a 100 colones will not get any "YOU" a dance; only a zona blue girl, and only if she is willing to strip as well.

Ugly as in "mean" is nasty, but judging from the guys that live in CR who seemingly report every ugly American incident on here actually have few to report. This actually says a lot for the thousands upon thousands of Americans that are going to CR. If we were really so bad and ugly, there would be more stories on here and more stories in the newspaper about American who act ugly.

Ugly as in "having a good time" is different. Guys are on vacation and likely with buddies that are just having a good time. So what if someone gets a little loud (in a nice way) every now and again while on vacation. If guys get drunk so what about this too - think about it, he embarrasses himself and IMHO is not a reflection on most Americans since most Americans are not sloppy drunk in CR.

Considering the huge number of guys coming to CR for an extremely good time - we are lucky there aren't more ugly incidents.

You guys talk as if you are 80..... hey watch how loud you laugh young man, you are in a respectable hooker bar, we can't have that kind of cutting up and laughing around here.

Sorry guys, I just like seeing the good in things instead of the bad.... think positive... be happy.... it really isn't that bad.

Since when is being responsible one's own actions "negative." It seems to me YOU are being negative and critical here, about someone you have not met. How is this differnt. I have hang out with K in CR, and he was certianly not negative; and trust me, we do not party like 80 year olds..

I didn't quote K Psychman so not sure why you refer to K. I quoted Scottp, but no offense to him, he is probably a great guy as well, I am just commenting on something he said.

I'm positive about the situation in CR (that there isn't very many ugly incidents) and yes I'm negative about the notion that the ugly America attitude is rampant in CR. I don't think it is a bad as some make it out to be, but that is just IMHO.

Overall, I think Americans, considering the environment we party in in Costa Rica, behave well. It could be much worse. I'm thankful that it isn't any worse, because it really could be much much much worse.
