Post subject:  Dentist Info

In mid November there was a crt guy, forgot handle, from Seattle that was getting dental work done.
I would appreciate your e-mailing me the name and # of the Dentist that you were recommending.
Anyone else in CR that can recommend a dentist, it would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Recommend Dr. Sergio Chen, Calle 6, Avenida 4 y 6. A short 10 minute walk from the area of the El. Presidente Hotel. Tel:222-0063/233-2703.

He speaks English is very professional with strict dental hygiene procedures. CR Dentists are about a third of the cost of a US dentist and Dr. Chen is about a third of the cost of the typical CR dentist who treats gringos.

I have been going to him for years and all the gringos who live in my area also go to him.

Highly reccomend Dr Erica Uhrig Martinez. 40ish female dentista not even 5 minutes from Presidente hotel. She is the only one I have been to in CR and was impressed. I broke a tooth off in SJ and was in pain and only went to her because I saw the dentist sign on ave Central. I was a bit nervous about going to a third world dentist and was releived when I found other gringos in the waiting room that spoke highly of her. All her chairs, dentist tools ect appeared to be the same as my USA dentist and she spoke very good english. She not only fixed my broken tooth but found 2 cavities and did a cleaning/ checkup and charged me $200. I was in the chair at least 2 hours and I dont know what my USa dentist wold have charged but it would have been a lot more. From leaving the Presidente front door turn right and go to the end of the pedestrian walkway where the busses are and a bit past that is the Plaza de Democracia park and she is directly across the street. I think there is a Mas o Menos supermarket real near and she is up the stairs on the 2nd floor. All I can say is that I was well pleased with her . J Y Dog

I used Dr. Chen on my last visit. I was there for five straight days. The longest time in chair 5.5 hours. Very nice man. I really liked that he has a slight build which makes his hands small. I had major repairs done over a five day period, and not once did I hear "open wider". He is very good about explaining the techniques that he uses, and didn't scrimp on the Novocain.

The cost was 1.25 million colones ($2,400.00), and would have been about 7 times more in the U.S.; 2 extractions, bridges and whiting. I now tell people that I have a million dollar smile.

A word of caution, don't go on the same day that I have an appointment, right Hola B.

It is a nice morning walk. From walking out of the Presidente, turn right continue to the Mercado Central (about 1/2 mile - 7 blocks) , turn left, cross Ave. 4, continue down the hill, and his office is on the left side, about mid-block. Ring the bell and you will be buzzed in. Le Grillion as marked on his map is about 2-3 doors south of Dr. Chen. It is bout a 10-15 minute walk. From the SL it would be about 1/2 hour, although I never just walked straight there, I took my time and watched the people on Ave. Central.

Anyone that may have questions about Dr. Chen please PM me.

Health & happiness to all.

If you are speaking of a holiday such as Thanksgiving the answer is no but if you are thinking Christmas or New Years then yes.

Yes, Dr. Chen is a good guy. He's my new dentist. Charges me about one fourth of what my dentist in the U.S. charges.

As stated...you must be patient with him. Not uncommon to be in the waiting room and dental chair waiting for several hours. It's a good idea to bring some reading materials with you.

Good direction but with minor hitch  turn right when you exit the Presidente and you will be headed east which is the opposite direction from where you want to go  Turn left on Avenida Central when exiting the President.

The address for Dr. Chen is

Calle 6, Ave. 4 y 6, 50 meters Sur del antiguo Registro Civil, San Jose Centro

Haven't been on the board for a while, but am guessing maybe I'm the fellow the original poster was referring to. The dentist I'm using was recommended me by a CRT member who had used his services. Trouble is this guy is pretty straight, and doesn't like mongers, so I haven't been passing his name out publicly. I'm headed back in Jan to complete my treatment course, spent around $1K the first trip and am spending several times that next trip, but I'll have that million dollar smile as well. PM me if you want a name.

Sounds like there are plenty of good recommendations to go around.
