Post subject: | Trolls |
In another active post (prolly no need to mention which), a poster is suspected (by some) of being a 'troll' and making false statements, or lying. i find this very curious. i, personally, have absolutely no idea whether the statements made are true or not... which could also be said of the various trip reports i've read. ![]() Now i can understand the motive to bolster a trip report for better standing in the fraternity. But why would someone falsify statements about pending weakness, confusion, frustration, etc. In other words, what does a 'troll' gain? Can't see any real incentive... am i missing something? ![]() Also, I was delighted (...can't believe i just used that word) to receive the responses i did to my last post about depth. THANKS, fellas. I felt like that post ran it's natural course, then died, and I didn't want to revive it just to say thanks. However, I did read each response several times, and greatly appreciate the insight offered therein. YMMV <------- Love that expression! |

Fluffing a trip report has to do with ego, getting attention and most importantly getting approval. We probably all have done it to some degree or another at some point. Trolling has to do with ego, getting attention put has nothing to do with gaining approval. Genuine trolls don't genuinely care what people think of them, at least not strangers over the internet. All they care about is getting a reaction - ANY reaction. To quote the AOL page on trolling "Trolls crave attention, and they care not whether it is positive or negative."http://members.aol.com/intwg/trolls.htm Trolls do this in various ways including by:
Asking for help with an implausable task or problem. Intentionally naive messages. Intentionally posting an outrageous argument, deliberately constructed around a fundamental but obfuscated flaw or error. Often the poster will become defensive when the argument is refuted, but may instead continue the thread through the use of further flawed arguments. Posting messages that go contrary to the prevailing attitudes of that forum. Pretending to be innocent, after a flamewar ensues. Plural or paranoid answers to the responses they get from others. Judge for yourself whether any of those apply to the subject in question, but many at least appear like they might. Also, this guy's credibility was already highly shaky as a result of an earlier thread he had started on going bareback. It is hard to believe any guy could be so incredibly naive, misinformed and foolish. Personally, I don't think this guy is troll. There are sometimes guys out there whose behavior can certainly appear that way to others. Call it "borderline false positives". But his actions are missing a lot of the other earmarks of a troll. Some guys really ARE naive and confused and aren't just acting that way. So how could there be so many falsehoods and contradictory aspects to any guy's story? Hey, we've all been lied to and misled by chicas. Most of us know enough not to fall for it. But even the best of us has on occasion believed or at least been unsure whether the girl might actually be telling the truth. If the guy in question is on his first trip, particular if he is new to mongering altogether, as this guy claims to be, he is even more apt to fall for the BS (and repeat it to us as gospel). In other words, the falsehoods in the posts may largely be the lies that were told to him by the chica herself and which he really believes. Unless we are a pure LAL guy, most of us have felt the emotional turmoil that a GFFE can create. Logic and reason can go out the window and, as our emotions and thought processes change, statements that contradict earlier statements can result. Part of us believe because we want to believe while another part of us know what a fool we are being. We tell ourselves and others one story or version of the truth as we would have ourselves believe it at one point as a way of justifying our actions and than at another period of greater lucidity reveal other aspects which may contradict our earlier statements. The biggest lies we tell are the lies we tell ourselves. ------------ Prolijo ![]() |

Post subject: | Cool- trolls is for real |
Oh wow, I didn't realize 'trolls' were a cutural phenomenon, documented by AOL! I figured one of you guys made up the term as a simple derogatory reference to that user... Pro: I see how the posts could be interpreted as "troll"ish, or as great naivete. Hmmm... Anybody care to make it interesting? I'd lay even money (say... a session) and I'll take either position. Any takers? I think if statements/situation are determined to be true, said poster deserves to have his dignity restored. And if not, well that'd be fun, too. ![]() I have a feeling determining the winner won't be difficult, given time. And I'll offer the said poster the opportunity to submit any evidence. Let's settle this once and for all ![]() YMMV |

I'm not trying to "pump up the volume", but as trolls are an ongoing problem and as Prolijo's analysis so spot on, I thought I'd bring it back. It matters not the specifics of the alleged troll discussed, merely the subject matter. |

I've been called a troll here before for speaking my mind, but not because of my statements but rather the fact that I'm not a paying member. I found that kind of strange. Oh, just realized the original poster didn't know that "troll" was a real term. |
