After being in CR 5 times and paying way to high phone rates from the hotel I have finally found a solution. Many of you may already know this but I thought I would help any newbies. Go to the DR front desk and ask for a ICE calling card 1,000. Colones $2 bucks US. Go around the corner to the pay phones that the girls use endlessly, Slide your card in and your off to cheap rates to the US. I talked for 18 minutes on one calling card to Florida over Laborday weekend. Forget the cell phones unless you live there. Hope this helps some CRT folks. ZORO

Almost forgot to mention why I use these phones at the DR. They have a digital screen on the pay phone that allows you to view your colones as they countdown this way you can say goodbuy before your time is up. Thats 10 to 12 cents per minute from one calling card. Can't beat that. ZORO

Zoro,
Good advice, but there's one problem with the calling cards sold at the DR. They are the ones with the chip in them, so they can only be used in pay phones with the credit card-type slot. You can't use them from your hotel room or a regular phone. I know because I bought one my first trip and I tried to use it from our rented house. No good.

The best ones that I found are the ones that say "199" on them. They were 3,000 col for 21 minutes in June. That's 29 cents/minute, better than the $1+ you pay at the hotel. Maybe the price went up by now. But it was good, it tells you your balance when you dial.

Yes, Orange, you are correct. And Zoro, I'm glad you found out before you ended up in bankruptcy court. I have used my cell from the Dominican Republic and CR to call back to the US. It was a pleasure to receive my first bill from Cingular after returning!!!

A smart person (when in the Dominican) would have purchased a local SIM card from any one of a number of cell phone shops. Therefore, you would be making local calls with your US cellphone. BTW, Orange, the name of the cell network in the DR is "Orange."

Also, a GREAT little gift for the girls are 1000 colones phone cards. They really appreciate them. Occasionally, I give my change and a 1K colones phone card to the ZB girls. I just pick up a few from the street vendor between the Del Rey and the Prez.
