Here we go again

I just finished putting my hurricane shutters up. I am not taking any chances, Hurricane Rita is expected to pass thru or near the Florida keys tomorrow. I hope everyone stays safe and it fizzels out.

I hope all my other florida neighbors stay safe also. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the gulf coast as this one is forecast to stregthen and head that way, again!

Worse thing for me is that it isn't going to get to Texas until Friday night so the media is going to make this hurricane a big issue no matter the size or where it goes.... going to hear about it until I'm sick.

The media is partly why people didn't leave N.O. in my opinion. They pump everything up so much that people can't tell the difference between real danger and pumped up danger. By the time it becomes apparent that the real thing is coming, it is too late to leave.

As for the failures in getting people out of N.O., I think the most heart sinking picture that I saw was the 75 school buses sitting in a parking lot more than half under water.

It seems like up to now, hurricanes have mostly been a wait and see thing since the media pumps them up and then deflates them and since they often don't go where predicted and since lots of the time they lose power before or just after hitting any land (they still carry plenty of rain, but the winds die when they hit land). People get tired of running from the false alarms.

Rita was my second ex-wife's name. I hope this hurricane isn't as much of a bitch as she was. I hope you Florida guys survive her better than I did. My son connects in Miami tomorrow on his way here. So the bitch is still affecting my life.

I guess I lucked out for my first hurricane, I was in Rio when Katrina blew through. I'm just under the northern edge of Rita and all I see is heavy rain and high winds at this time. I'm watching the Miami TV news, lot's of auto accidents and power outages (3300 locally and more in Miami-Dade and Monroe - the keys) and watching reports from Hollywood Beach 10 miles to the east.

My plans might be interuppted due to Rita. I'm suppose to fly into Maimi tommorow morning, but it looks like I might have to reschedule. How the heck am I to get to CR? My partner keeps calling me, all worried, regarding our first trip. I don't have cable so he keeps giving me weather reports...

I'm going to call the AA later in the day to find out the status of my flight. I've been sitting around for four days now waiting... waiting... I can't wait any longer!! In the meantime I've been reading, printing and researching this site, something I should have probably done a long time ago, but I am a procrastinator when it comes to everything.

I've had about enough of this hurricane sh*t !! This is the 7th hurricane to hit Florida in 13 months. It's gettin' real old......

Well, it looks like I have escaped this one. Rita just passing to the South of me. Just a lot of wind and rain, not much damage outside. Possibly katrina already pruned the neighborhood. I hope the Keys get lucky to.

Anyone to the South, my prayers are with you. And also everyone in the gulf coast. Keep an eye on this one.

The Postal service was cancelled today, but i just got a package delivered by Fed-Ex. I knew it was supposed to arrive today but I was really surprised to see them.

What happened to the Postal creed? "Neither rain, nor wind, nor sleet, or snow...............

Glad ya survived ok the bitch Rita. Her feeder bands have been dumping loads of rain [ and thunder] for the past 3 days in my area-- getting swamped with 5 + inches of the wet stuff

Sorry if we disagree. I spent days with no power heating canned beans on my BBQ grill drinking bottled water trying to clear the downed trees and hoping for help. I did not think it was media hype then or now.



Dam what a shame, Think how good the folks in shelters feel.

I'm afraid we have begun the 20 year cycle similar to 1930-1965. There were 21 hurricanes in 1933(!) and we've had 17 in 2005 so far.

Last slow period was 1965 to 1995 so appears we'll be getting belted to at least 2015.

Galveston survived mostly unscathed. A fire burned a block and one historical buildings wall colapsed. Most of the Island has power now and things are returning to normal. We dodged a bullet. Houston had a few problems but not much major that I heard about other than the traffic on evacuation. Beaumont is a war zone ( this info is not from TV), western Louisiana looks like a bomb went off. As far as hype about Huricanes goes, people do not understand that a catagory 5 hurricane is basicly a 200 mile wide factor 3 tornado. We were on the dry side of the storm but still had rain and 60 - 80 mph winds for 10 hours. Huricanes are bad if one is in the area run.

I live right off Galveston Bay between Houston and Galveston. I was in a mandatory evacuation zone and left my house Wednesday at noon and it took 14 hours to reach San Antonio (normally a 3 hour drive). The first 12 hours I only traveled a total of 40 miles. Not a good day.

We were lucky in that the storm hit further east up the coast and were on the clean side of the hurricane, but my heart goes out to those in eastern Texas and western Louisiana as they got pounded pretty bad. I only had minor damage to my house.
