Why don't hurricanes form near the equator?

Three ingredients are needed for hurricane formation: warm ocean water (80(degrees)-plus), light winds aloft and a sufficiently strong Coriolis effect--an apparent deflective force caused by the Earth's rotation that imparts spin or "vorticity" to a developing storm. While warm water and light winds are in abundance near the equator, the Coriolis force is not. It is non-existent at the equator and only becomes strong enough to support hurricane formation at a distance of between 5 and 10 degrees of latitude from the equator. This is why a country like Panama, lying between 8 to 9 degrees north latitude, and coastal areas of Columbia and Venezuela at 10 degrees north latitude are rarely affected by hurricanes.

[from the weatherman at WGN in Chicago]

I get asked this a lot, and here's our answer.

Because there aren't any trailor parks in Costa Rica. Didn't you know that God created hurricanes and tornadoes to rid the world of trailor parks? :) Once all the trailor parks are gone... no more hurricanes and tornadoes.

Just curious............wouldn't a real weatherman know how to spell COLOMBIA?

By the way, a few years ago, about a couple of hundred miles north of Costa Rica..........a cat. 4 hurricane named Mitch paid a deadly visit.

My idea of a housewarming party is to have my friends come over and take the wheels off my new home.

A real cracker knows you spell house: t-r-a-i-l-E-r.

I took the quote word for word. I guess he does NOT know how to spell Colombia. Also... Costa Rica is not totally out of the zone, just mostly out of the zone.

And volcanos, at least one (Arenal) of which are active. I believe the last time the Irazu erupted was in 1962 or 1963 when JFK visited CR. Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken. If Irazu did erupt, Cartago could potentially become a disaster area.

For the history buffs, that is exactly why San Jose is now the capital, not Cartago. And why you won't find many old buildings in Cartago.

Hurricanes strike the US Gulf Coast and US So. Atlantic Coast while leaving CR untouched for one simple reason:

God punishes the Gulf Coast and So. Atlantic Coast because they do not live up to the expectations of Revs. Dr. Pat Robertson and Dr. Jerry Falwell.

God kills people who don't subscribe to the beliefs of the two TV preachers above.

Simple as that.

I think it has something to do with all the BBBJ's everyone negotiates for. All that suction causes a clockwise spin in the atmosphere that counteracts the counterclockwise spin that the hurricanes have. :?

You are correct, in fact Pat Roberston killed Supreme Court Judge Rehnquist just by praying for another vacancy on the court.

New Orleans had some gay pride event scheduled they were just asking for trouble.
