VB,
There are several companies out there that can expedite the passport issuance process. I had a friend use the following website, and he got his passport within 3 business days.

www.vippassports.com

Good Luck,
Mikey B.

there are several sites on the internet. he would have to have 2 photos , send them off overnight and pay for overnight return. i think it is a 2 days to process so one week is possible.

Do an internet search. There are tons of on-line services that can do this for him. It will cost between $50-150 over and above the regular government fee for the extra service depending on how fast he needs it (probably about $100 for 4 day service). The one I used for my Brazil Visa was pretty good http://www.passportvisaexpress.com/. I couldn't tell you if it is the best or cheapest for US passports.

If you are near cities like Philadelphia or New York, you can get passport in one day with additional $60 for expedite service. You have to show them the proof of travel dates. Usually you go there in the morning and you will have your passport aroung 12:00 noon. You have to take an appointment.

I got one in Miami a few years back over night. Had an appt by calling their hotline phone number to teh Miami office late morning...then had passport to pick up by noon the next day. Not sure if that is still available as I understand post 9/11 and some new rules that ALL passports come out of DC now. Hope something works out for your son.

There are overnight services but they are not full proof. I lost my passport once and got the replacement overnight but, when I renewed (replacement for lost are valid for 1 year) they required me to go to a court house site and have it done through the normal process. Overnight services are great but can have issues since 911.

My son called vippassports.com and they said that they could do it in 3 days for $75. I hope they are for real.My son was a little concerned when they answered the phone "Hello".

I have done work on this area and the posts that mention going directly to a regional Passport Service Agency Office are on the right track. Major cities (Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, etc) have them. You can get specific addresses and phone numbers from the Department of State website:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/about/ ... s_913.html

I believe it is correct that you have to present evidence (Itinerary) that you are leaving the country within 2 weeks. It used to be first come first served but I see a mention that appointments are now necessary so this may indeed be a change for the better. Providing you take all the necesary documentation you will have your passport that day.
