Guys, you have to see Spanglish! Maybe everyone else already has seen it, but I recently saw it on DVD and was so impressed that I decided to write a movie review for the forum. The basic premise is that our hero, a prosperous chef, is married to the typical gringabitch. Spoiled, controlling, vain, frigid, depressed, totally into herself, blame-assigning – well, you know the rest.

A Mexicana, Flor, is abandoned by her husband and moves to the US for work. The only incongruity of the movie is that Flor is just too perfect – incredibly beautiful, poor yet educated but speaks not a word of English, understanding, sensitive, intelligent. In other words, the opposite of the gringabitch wife. I thought her accent sounded more Spanish than Mexican and indeed the actress is actually from Spain. Flor sneaks across the river carrying designer roller suitcases – a mildly odd scene.

Flor lives in the Mexican area of LA until she decides she needs to get a job outside to provide better for her daughter. She is hired by the gringabitch as a housekeeper and nanny. A funny scene is where the gringabitch absolutely can’t pronounce Flor’s name and proudly explains that she knows only 3 words of Spanish and doesn’t want to learn any more.

Gringabitch proceeds to try to revise Flor’s daughter’s life with purchases, a new school, and trips, all assuming that Flor will be extremely grateful even though she had not been consulted about remaking her daughter. You know the routine, totally controlling and then shocked when the victim is not grateful.

Gringabitch then feels that she is not understood by her husband so she has an affair with a convenient real estate salesman. Our hero finds out and just happens to encounter Flor while he is leaving the house considering divorce. He fixes a romantic dinner for Flor at his multi-starred, $100+ per meal restaurant.

I won’t divulge the rest, but will say that our hero makes what I consider an incredibly bad decision in the closing scene.

It really sums up the typical gringabitch and the advantages of chicas. Many of you will see parts of your lives in this movie.

Ummmm , where exactly is this area , I live here and can't seem to find it.

IMO , this movie sucked , I couldn't get thru the first hour of it on a 14 hour flight to Taipei , if you can't watch a movie on an airplane , well.......

The movie was fun to watch and a great performance from Paz Vega, but:

Flor was supposed to be Mexican but she has an obvious accent from Spain.

Gringabitch cheats on her husband and tells him about it? That's new to me!

Flor's daughter tells Gringabitch that she is the coolest white woman she has ever met. I was thinking, Cristina your "mom" is white.

What the hell is the French Toast recipe?

And, if you want to see Paz Vega's panocha go watch "Lucia y el Sexo" - she's naked in most of that film.

I agree -- see Paz in "Sex and Lucia"

And, I saw Spanglish after Trip #2 -- fortunately alone in the house -- and I was screaming at the TV screen -- "Sandler you IDIOT! Take her!"

Other reviews mention that director was just out of divorce (Gringa, of course)

Exactly my feeling. I can't imagine what he was thinking unless it was a ploy by the writer & director to get us all thinking and saying this.

I did not know this but it definitely makes sense. It is just too true to life.

Probably didn't need to audience-test it on Gringo/Gringas for the writer/director to know that the "right" answer was for him to give his gringa another chance.

Hey -- that racism just leaves more for us, eh? :D

I thoguht it would have made a much better ending if-- after she starts babbling about cheating on him-- he back handed her and tossed her out the second-story window.

And then called the maid to clean it up. But not before cruising down to Melrose and Vine for some Lesbo/Tranny action.

But whatever-- it's Sandler. What can you expect?
