I may be dumb - but I can't find info on this.

My two friends and I would like to rent cell phones on an upcoming trip. Make it so if we get split up (as always happens) we can reunite in the middle of the night.

Has anyone had success with this?

If so, how?

Thanks in advance...

Very expensive, if you have T mobile or Cingular, cheaper just to use your own phones, just keep it limited to minimal minutes ( .99 to 1.99 per minute).

If you still want it, here is the link....

Thanks for the reply. I don't think it is that high priced. It will be very efficient to nbe able to wander off and then catch back up with the crew wherever they are. No more waiting on people. The deposit is steep - but understandable.

Thanks again.

I rented two phones in Costa on my July 1-5 trip. They were great! We were all able to stay in touch.

Unfortunately, I rented them from COSTA RICA SOLUTIONS RENT A PHONE. Despite my numerous efforts and phone calls, they kept my entire deposit on both phones. That is a total of $ 600.00 (300 per phone).

The proper charge should have been about 100 - 120 per phone, based upon usage. In essence, they have converted $360 - $400 from me.

Needless to say - be forwarned. Do not use this company. After numerous pomises that it takes several days to process a charge back to the card, etc - nothing. (Of course, like a dumb ass, I used a debit card). Now, they just hang up on me. Also, at their request, I sent numerous emails, which were also ignored.

I got screwed - but I am passing this along to others FYI....

I am referring to:

http://www.costaricaphonerental.com/phone/index.htm

If your aquaitenance can help me, it would be appreciated.

If it is not him, maybe I can use him in the future. Having a phone was great (just not worth $400.00)

Thanks

I got to be honest, T-Mobile's plan even if it works is a crock. Even if you don't answer the phone, if it rings in CR you get charged $1.99. I had the girl tell me to avoid this I could turn my phone off and then just check my voicemail. I don't know what planet she was on since to check VM takes two minutes at $1.99...

So, use Enrico's service is the best bet. I've used him before, he dropped the phone to me in the DR just after I arrived and a somewhat shy secretary met me a block away  to pick it up.

That said, I've emailed 3 times in the past 5 days for rental reservation and I've got no reply. Anyone else?

Thanks for this thread -- I've been trying to figure it out, too, so I'm not hotel-bound when favorita is giving me her primo demonstration of Tica Time. I want to be able to leave and be reachable by cell.

I had Cingular's international calling for awhile, something like $3 a month extra to make the calls .25/minute. But that's from home in the US. It's the roaming question that I have to get Cingular to explain to me, several times now and I'm still not sure.

If you have your phone turned off, you don't get dinged if a US local call comes in?

If you have your phone on, you still get dinged even if you don't answer?

Once your service identifies your location as CR, _everything_ that happens turns into roaming???

Most of our phone conversations are a minute or two max anyway -- our language compatibility is 20% by phone vs. 40% face to face. Just addresses and "cinco minutos"

I always bring my phone along, just for real emergencies. But they've got me scared to turn it on when I'm away from home. That first surprise cell phone bill always scars you for life

I can only speak for T-Mobile but you can get a blowjob cheaper than a ten minute call!

Here is the deal with them;

1. If you make a call it's $1.99 per minute. That is local or long distance.
2. If your phone is turned on and you receive a call, whether you answer or not it is $1.99. If you do answer, it's going to be how long you were talking on the phone for.
3. If you check your Voice Mail, it's $1.99 per minute.
4. Most of the other cell functions you are used to in the US do not work in CR. Email, t-zones, etc.

Better off renting a sim card for your unlocked GSM phone for $9.95 per day with a $200 deposit or using one of their phones outright with a $325 deposit. Dont worry about the deposit. These guys are legit.

In this case, all local calls, international incoming calls and voicemail are included and free. To dial the USA, the rate is $1.25 per minute.

Hope it helps.

Like I said, I liked the phone. It did cost some friends from the US something like $ 3.99 per minute to call me down there. Bad idea. One of them complained, and got it reduced.

I think my incoming calls were free. So I( just gave my # out and took a lot of incoming calls.

Of course, my complaint is that I got clipped for my full deposit on two phones. The guys I dealt with (Cell Phone Solutions) were NOT legit.

I will try your guy as I am going down Labor Day weekend. Due to the # of lurks going down there, it may be tough. Will there be any girls for us low key guys? A phone would help....

My point is - I got ripped off...

Hocu--

my buddy used the same service and was ripped off the same way. this service was recommended by the concierge at the Presidente. all efforts to get his deposit returned have failed. the company will not respond to any phone calls or emails. he used the service back in February and they still have not credited the deposit.

we're going again in September so I'm sure he'll mention something to the Presidente hotel as well.

again, STAY AWAY FROM COSTA RICA SOLUTIONS CELL PHONE RENTAL

I wish there was something that could be done about this. I go down there for fun, so I am not going to really pursue anything. Just have to take my medicine. But STAY AWAY can't be emphasized enough

Agree with DildoMan.

Have heard nothing but good comments from guys who have used Rico's company:

www.costaricarentacellphone.com

No one has ever indicated they had problems getting their deposit returned.
