Post subject:  Dry Superbowl in Costa Rica

Taken from today's AM Costa Rica.

It's beginning to look like a dry Superbowl

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

If the purpose of United States professional football is to sell beer, Superbowl Sunday will be a big failure here.

Bar and restaurant owners who cater to North American customers are awakening to the fact that Superbowl Sunday, Feb. 5, is also the day of national elections here in Costa Rica.

That means no alcohol sales.

SHOULD WE JUST RENT THE CONVENTION HALL NOW? I would assume private parties are exempt to this situation.... Any locals care to elaborate...

A bigger issue is how many dry days before the game will there be? If the weekend is dry, I guess there is no sense in holding a day game party with no alcohol for days before.

For some reason the Ticos, if drinking, have a tendency to be loud and unyielding about their political stance or candidate and get into fights.

There are usually dry days preceding the election day when the candidates hold parades and rallys. Thus three or four days of no alcohol.

The other times it is dry is during Easter week. It is really dead from the Wednesday preceeding Easter to noon or so on the Monday following Easter.

Note it is dead and boring from Christmas until New Years when everbody in CR visits their family and stays home.

I believe Ace is correct in his post. I did not live here in the last Presidential election so do have first hand knowledge.

Perhaps the people who will be affected ( Bill @ SL, Eddie @ ZB, etc.)
can fill us in on the situation.

If it is a bad as we think it might be we will have to get Paul Tagliabue
to get CR to change the date of their election

I was there during the last election. We knew about it ahead of time, stocked up at duty free...had a local friend pick up a cooler and couple cases of beer and bought some cheap plastic flasks in the US. We were the hit of the DR. the bar would supply the mixers, and the party was on. If you do it right, you will be in with the chicas, and the envy of the other guys who didnt think of it. Honestly though, this will only work if you are staying at the DR or really close, as you have to restock fairly often.

So are the bars allowed to be open if they want to, but cannot sell alcohol if they want to?

well the blue marlin, more or less, has to be open, since it is part of the Hotel Del Rey, but the policia will have all their coolers and liquor taped up (or locked) until after the election. I was told that technically what we did was a "no no", but figured we couldn't vote anyway...so what's the harm. I am sure many bars (that are just bars) would be closed..

So one would might assume that the MP's would perhaps being doing a brisk business during these times, or are they closed down as well.

Is it to late for me to run for President?
Some changes I could make are.

2)Tica cap, 30k top for 3 Hours.

3)No Tica fee's at local hotels.

4)Taxi drivers must drive under 80km from the airport. No limit if your going to the airport.

5)$49 per night cap on hotel rooms.

6)No exit tax.

7)Ticas can't work the Hotels after age 27.

8)Ticas able to travel without Visa. This only applies to Gringo's 30 day limit.

9)No more sales outside the DR. Ex: Blood pressure guy, Cigar guy, Sunglasses, Watches.

10)Happy Hour at the BM 7 Days a week, 5 P.M. to 3 A.M. $1 cap on all alcohol.

11)Close Morazan Park.

12)Airfare Cap. $199 Anywhere from the U.S. & Canada.

Of course this is a short list, But my CRT cabinet will enact many more benefits.

Please Elect ZORO for CR President. Who wants to be Vice President?

All places with license to sell alcohol will be close. All these places will be closed starting Saturday 04 at 12:01AM until Sunday midnight.

Private parties can be held with no problem.

Bill, I want a cut for this idea or at least free admission. (and chica of my choice)
