Is this the Highway that will make the driving time to Jaco 45 minutes?

CNC Approves Concession to Run San José - Caldera Highway
Costa Rica's national concessions council (CNC) has awarded the concession of the San José-Caldera highway to the Autopistas del Sol consortium, CNC project engineer Guillermo Ramírez told BNamericas

Yes, the project has been under discussion for the last 22 years or so.

Based on how things work here i'd be surprised if it done by 2007.

Jsmythe,
The drive to Jaco is a little tricky. When I was there in June, we drove from SJ to Jaco. It took us a little over 2 hours. We drove through these small towns and shitty roads and had to ask directions a few times. We didn't hit the highway until probably half way into the trip. We only had the map they gave us at the rental place.

Now, on the way back, we got better directions and we stayed on the highway the whole time. We arrived at the airport, close to where we rented a house in San Joaquin in about 1 hour. Literally. If you can figure out the way to stay on the highway, and avoid driving through the towns, it's much quicker.

I thought they had all the bridges completed back in 2003? I realize
its CR, but what's taking so long with the actual highway? I'd like to know exactly where the project stands. It's getting to be ridiculous! I'll bet if the government gave everyone involved a nice raise, it would get done in 'no time'.

That reminds me of when they relocated the bar (La Cantina) at the Best Western Irazu back in 1999 or early 2000. The bar used to be located near the pool, and they moved it to the current location near the front entrance. As I was staying at the hotel at the time, I was observing the progress. They had an absolute deadline, say Saturday morning at 10:00 for completion of the new bar. At around midnight Friday night, I knew there was 'no way in Hell' they could finish it in the remaining 10 or so hours. There was just too much work to be done. They had perhaps six to eight men working on it. When I walked by at around 10:00 the next morning it was completed! I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe it...I don't know how they did it! It just goes to prove that with the right pressure and/or incentives, nearly anything can be done!

Hola GringoTim,
good to see you back posting again ,hope life is treating you better :D

Raoul Duke seems to have some heavy problems as Consul in Iraq :(
Honey is sure to save him in the end 8)

Just reread Hunter S Thompson "The Great Shark Hunt " after 20+ years, and in reliving those same times, same places with a much more mature and perceptive outlook is just "awesome" [in the current lingo] :o

Sorry he had to end his life ala Hemingway in Wood Creek , Aspen last Feb. After all his National Observer reports on Latin America in the 60's,
would have loved to see his commentary of the current Costa Rica scene.
He probably would have gagged and cursed to no end :x
