An internet search for optometrists in CR has not been very fruitful so far. Is there a good place where I could get an exam and some glasses in less than a month? Mine is not a typical prescription and, though I speak some Spanish, it would be easier if I could do at least part of the interview in English. Some of the discussion is more complicated than mejor-peor while talking about astigmatism.

Over the past years have had a number of exams and glasses done at Opticas Vision. They are scattered all over the gulch.

They use the same computerized exam equipment that you would find in the states. There prices are very low and you get the glasses in 1 or 2 days.

However, I do not have a very complicated prescription so can not answer how equipped they are to address complex problems. Would suggest you stop in and discuss it with the Doctor on duty.

I wear prescription glasses for reading, astigmatism on left eye. I was on leave in Costa Rica and somehow broke my glasses, went to San Jose looking for an Optica, first one I saw was Optica Vision, had the exam within 20 minutes without an appointment, picked up the glasses two days later. I was able to read with the new glasses but I felt like it was hard to focus, as soon as I returned to the US I went to see my optician and he told me that the exam was accurate, but the lenses were not aligned properly, they were actually jacked up. I was told later on that Optica Blanco, between Farmacia Fischel and fotos AGFA in San Jose is very good. It was a lot cheaper in Costa Rica though. Good luck.

Go to Optica Alpina which is a couple of doors down from the Nashville Bar. I went there this past May and had glasses made the same day for about $55.

The owner is an old Chinese/Costa Rican who does speak decent english.

I too broke my glasses on my first trip to CR., I went to Optica Jiminez on the main drag down by the opera house and was very pleased. I thought the equipment and service were better than in the US. I wore my spares for a day of fishing in Jaco and the next day when I returned to SJ the new ones were ready and my old ones had been repaired as good as new. I think the price was under two hundred for everything, if I remember correctly, about $120.00 total.
