I need to buy some rubbing alcohol.

Everytime I go to a local store and ask for alcohol, I end up with the stuff you put into a lantern, or else hydrogen peroxide.

How Do You Say "Rubbing Alcohol" In Spanish?

Rolex, why would they sell you hydrogen peroxide when you ask for alcohol?

"Una botella de alcohol" would be appropriate.

.

Pronounced "al-col", with the accent on the second syllable.

Also, "al-col verde" is witch-hazel.

Thanks. The problem is-- they understand the alcohol part.... but they don't understand the "rubbing alcohol" part. So, the stuff they keep trying to give me is similar to lighter fluid.

Guys, guys, guys... you've got it wrong.

When you ask for "alcol" you will get liquor or a butane-type product.

If you want rubbing alcohol, ask for 'alcolado' pronounced "al-col-A-do" with the accentuation on the capital 'A'.

This is the proper way to ask for rubbing alcohol.

DISCLAIMER- I am from Puerto Rico, and the dialect is different from country to country in the Hispanic world... this may not necessarily be correct in CR as it is in PR.

Hope this helps.

I've been known to use guaro as a substitute for isopropyl, which seems to work for some uses. It is available everywhere, cheap and you can drink whatever is left before going home. If you need hydrogen peroxide, ask for agua oxigenado.

Gentlemen:
This is my first post on this forum, I must say I'm impressed with the number of participants. To answer Rolex's question the proper way to ask for rubbing alcohol in Costa Rica is "alcohol de fricción" remember the "h" is silent,

I am costarrican but have been in the US for about 30 years, I will retire from the Navy in about 2 months and moving to Costa Rica soon.
