I'm planning a 30+ day trip and staying in the gulch.
Anybody know of a cheap place to get laundry done to avoid hotel prices? Thanks.

There is a lavandaria in the arcade, on avenida segunda calle 3 y 1, on the west side of the Hotel Gran Costa Rica. It is on the bottom floor in the space with the internet café. I do not know the prices. |

Hotel prices are not all the same for laundry. I've seen it from quite reasonable at less expensive hotels to the prices you pay at the Presidente or Del Rey, which are like at expensive hotels in NA. Ask ahead of time. At Hotel Castillo, I just have the maids do my laundry on the premesis. Aparthotels often have a way for you to do your own conveniently. Be aware that laundry in SJ is usually a bit more expensive than at a laundromat in the US. |

Good points, Veelee. One of the things I liked about the Casa conde was that they had a washer/dryer in each apartment. I didn't even have to go out to have my clothes washed. Also, although I haven't tried it, I suspect that if you've been leaving tips for the maids all along they might be amenable to cutting you a special deal to do a few shirts "off the books".(e.g. 1-2K colones directly into their pockets rather than 2-3X that to the hotel just for adding a few shirts to the load they were going to do anyway). Has anyone ever tried that? |

Maybe some of the vets here can confirm or elaborate on this... but my extended (nearly a year) tavels through europe living exclusively out of a backpack forced me to open up to other options... though i'd occasionally splurge for a laundry-mat for my jeans and heavy socks and such, I found it almost as cheap, and a lot more practical to just ditch less sentimental (read: expensive) items like t-shirts and underwear and just buy them from the absurdly inexpensive shops and markets. While I realize that cost might not be the big factor here, convienence is key. You aren't going to lug a hamper full of your dirty duds to or from your hotel very often, and think about the hours it takes to do a couple loads, then wait for them to dry and fold etc. Of course I did discover that this one place I went to near a school in Budapest was frequented by many lovely young students who always seemed more than happy to assist a puppy-dog faced american tourist who couldn't read the Magyar instructions (yeah right, how hard is it to work a washing machine) which was a major ice-breaker for norotiously shy Hungarian ladies. Maids who are tipped have been known to toss a few extra items into the wash in some places, but I know of at least one instance where management was not amused. The price at places like the Bella Vista is very reasonable, and at the Castillo it is definitely worth the price. Maids who are tipped also may not charge quite as much for a load. |

I use Sixaola Laundry on the southside of Avenida 2 between Calle 7 & 9. It is located about mid-block in the back of an arcade. The laundry provides very prompt and inexpensive service (about 1500 - 2000 C per load). Dry-cleaning is available, too. |

sixaola closed and the place up the hill from the dunn inn closed also i loved that place up from the Dunn Inn, cheap and quick plus it is great to go home with freshly laundered clothes only problem, i accidently didn't seperate my favorites and my clothes  wife found panties, t-shirt and shorts of hers in my stuff hey, what do you want from me, I thought you would be happy that you wouldn't have to do my laundry when I got home no problems ever since

Lavanderia y Dry Clean Camila is right across c. 9 from the Soledad church, about a block and a half south of the Presidente on the west side of the street. They charge something like 2400 CRC per kilo and do a very good job. Dry cleaning is available but I am unsure of the prices. I got a full laundry bag, two weeks' worth of dirty clothes cleaned there for under $10.00
