Next night in Carpio. This was a Nica barrio that a lot of guys would not be able to handle. I enjoyed it, but I definately do not recommend looking for a room there.
Wow, someone else has actually been to Carpio!
When my Nica would come down to visit me in San Jose, we would always go out and visit her aunts/uncles/cousins etc. who live in Carpio. It is regarded as the poorest, most dangerous, crime ridden slums in all of Costa Rica with almost one murder per day. But I personally have met nothing but good, hard working people out there and had some of the best times of my life. Despite the poverty, those people still know how to smile and dance and enjoy life as it comes. It gives me perspective on just how materialistic our culture is in the USA. With the way the people look at me there, I figured I was the only gringo who ever stepped foot on their turf, but it is good to hear about someone else visiting there as well. I'm sure Scuba would agree that its a horizon expanding experience.
For anyone else heading out to Hospital Mexico, if you are faint of heart do not accidently go too far past the Parque de Diversiones or you will find yourself right there in the heart of Carpio, and for the inexperienced it is not a pretty place.
