From Inside Costa Rica this morning,

Quote:
San José to Have Street Names? The Municipality is Studying the Idea
Do you know the Toyota on Paseo Colóm? From there it's two hundred metres to the north, then 50 west "the fifth house from the corner, with the black fence and large palm tree".

That is a typical direction to in San José as street names are few and signs are less.

Finding a friend's house or a commercial establishment can be an adventure, leaving many frustrated only to try again another day.

It is for this reason that the Municipality of San José, in their attempt to bring order to the city, is studying a project that would see streets have names and houses a number.

The idea is to make an address easier to find. Rafael Arias, a consultant to the Municipality admits that the capital city is "a little" disorganized.

The Municipality is being tight lipped about the project, preferring to make a decision and iron out all the details before making an announcement. Another reason that is prompting change is the development of new buildings in the city, who are asking for an easier way to be found.

One example is the Mercedes Tower on Paseo Colon. It is the latest modern structure on the main road into San José centre.

It was easy to find since the Mercedes dealership occupied the ground floor. Now, that space is being occupied by the Scotiabank, it makes things a little more difficult.

For those who remember the Mercedes dealership, they will continue to use it as a point of reference, leaving those not familiar with the area totally lost, which means going back to asking at least three people for directions and if two or more coincide, then you are on the right path.

Not to mention 70E and Club 40.

Personally, I'm not so sure about this plan.

It might not be a bad thing as long as the street name corresponded with the applicable cross street. I could figure out that 747 is just north of Ave. 7. But I don't have a lot of faith that the municipality if they do anything at all will do anything quite that logical. For example, even a "sophisticated" place like NYC is not even that smart (eg. the Madison Sq. Garden is around 400 7th Ave. or between 31st and 33rd Sts.

Secondly, I hope they're not talking about replacing the number grid system with actual street names like Paseo Estudiante instead of Calle 9 etc. or Calle Amargura in San Pedro instead of Calle 3. For that matter, why do they use a different street number system in that part of town?

Thirdly, whatever they do is going to only be of limited help if they don't first put in more street signs. I could find things a hell of lot easier, even without exact numbered street addresses, if I at least could more easily tell which street corner I am standing at, but most streets do not even have signs.

Fourth and finally, why bother? The locals are used to getting around they way they do now. They already have numbered streets and yet not only don't they utilize that as a system of reference but they use landmarks instead and often ones that are no longer there either (like the Mercedes dealer or Coca Cola). If a cabby can't get you to the Del Rey when you tell him "Calle 9 entre la avenida 1 y 3", its not going to be much better if you told him 135 Calle 9 instead.

I should add, for what ever its worth though I'm sure others might disagree, that there is a certain charm to the way Josefinos do things that reminds me I'm in a foreign capital and not just like any city back home.

Numbers on the buliding would be nice, and the street numbers posted. You will never know where you where find it posted. I once sent a package to a Colombiana I was seeing that lived in San Sedro and the address was:

Del Apartmento #14 De Finca La Melba
Del Antiguo Banco Anglo
300 m Norte, 175 m Este
San Pedro, San Jose
Costa Rica

I can get there but give you directions, forgeda-bout-it!

Some of you may recognize this address, a couple years later I visited some other Colombianas here!

Not many people know this but there is mail service in Costa Rica. The address is just like directions,

Sabana Oeste
Fuerza Y Luz
300m Norte, 50m Este

seems strange but the mail gets here :D :D

Perhaps they would allow us to help them come up with names. Lets see now...Don Gordo Boulevarde or Vegas Bob Court (which would only be open during happy hour).

YO There:
To hell with SJ street names and numerical addresses......they need to address the problem of CR road names, kilometer readings and directions for those few mongers that venture out of the shadows of the gulch.

I love this country... but some of these government types are pure and simple morons.

First, the concept of NAMING STREETS and using ADDRESSES was a superb idea that came to most countries about 60 years ago. The locals don't "get by" with the current system. They suffer from it. And it contributes to the inefficiencies of the country as a whole.

Secondly, if they should do anything about anything regarding the streets, it should be to make an effort to GET THE Ch*ldren SLEEPING IN CARDBOARD BOXES OFF THE STREETS.

I saw a seven-year old sleeping in a cardboard box, today... right on the side of a major downtown street.

Once I figure out how to get citizenship, I'm gonna have to do something about this. It's just amazing to me that this is the richest country in Central America, and these people can walk on their way to work, stepping over Ch*ldren sleeping in the street.

And then criticize America for being gun crazy and money-centered.

Since I use a PO box in Miami for my US mail, I have no problem and I pick it up once a week.
Most of my local bills arrive via the carrea on time but once in a while, I don't receive a bill like the telephone bill and all of a sudden, ICE just cuts me off and then I have to pay a re-connect fee the next month. When I complain, they tell me its my responsibility to know that the bill didn't arrive and I have to go to ICE and pay in person if a bill dosen't get to me.
