It was the summer of 2002 and it was my first trip to Costa Rica. I had no idea what a monger was or that I would become one. I love Latin culture so the purpose of my trip was to learn Spanish. I enrolled in a Spanish language academy which provided me with transporatation from the airport, lodging, spanish lessons and board. At the end of the first week, some of the other students and I took a trip to Quepos/Manuel Antonio. I stayed in the Hotel Del Mar (good prices). After basking in the sun on the BEAUTIFUL beach in the daytime we went back to our rooms, took naps and awoke ready to party. Our destination was the Mar y Sombra which we had heard was place to dance. Women were everywhere but I was a bit shy at that time. Finally, one tica walked up to me with a big smile. I took her hand and we began to dance. My spanish is pretty decent so we spoke on a variety of topics. We then walked to the beach and began to kiss. Long story short, we went back to my hotel room. Their is nothing like hearing a woman say, "Si", "Rico", and "Papi" when you are in the act! Almost immediately after we finished she went home but not before giving me her phone number. At the time I didn't understand why (PRE-CRT!!) she went home so soon. Elated I looked for my next Tica when we returned to San Jose. On an off-chance I asked the Cab Driver to take me where I could find some "damas." He took me to the Del Rey and I had no idea what I was in store for. At first, I just thought it was my lucky night. The girl guy ratio (in July) was 8:1. I was immediately flattered by so many women coming up to me and wanting to "talk." I felt like a star!! Because I wasn't really having any fluency problems, everything around was going complete over my head. The amount of girls, the atmosphere, the gringos in corner with girls on their laps....I was oblivious. As I was enjoying my second beer a Tico came up to me and offered to sell me some X and weed. I brushed him off but he awakened my street senses. Suddenly, everything slowed down and I knew what the deal was. I was in a bar with "ladies of the night!!" When the next chica approached I aked her to go to a hotel with me. She said cien but being that I am not completely naive I bargained for $80. The next day I went right to the internet to see if this "culture" was shared on any websites. Sure enough it was and by the end of my trip I had visited the Molino Rojo, IDEM and Arte y Sauna. I haven't been the same since. My next trip is in June. Pura Vida. |

However-- I don't mean to shatter any illusions of your self image, but IMHO.... anyone who walks into the Del Rey and doesn't immediately realize that it is a hooker bar... IS COMPLETELY NAIVE !!! Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Nice report,by the way Molino Rojo and Idem are still alive and well.I think Arte Suana is history but there are many outher places.Oasis and Zona Blue are not to be missed as well as many outhers.Enjoy your trip.rbc100 |

I agree with you BIG TIME Piroca. I know it is their custom & have become use to it. They use it the same as we use baby, give it to me baby. But it is a distraction sometimes for me if they get loud with it. Makes me think they see me as really old or there was a lot of incest in their family? Zip |

Years ago, 2 colones would get you a beer and a boca at the Hotel Europa. 100 colones was a lot of money then. A friend of mine showed me the receipt. |
