Post subject:  Passport information

I know we've had the conversation over carrying original passports or copies before. The most recent news I had seen was that the copy is sufficient.

UNFORTUNATELY...Theory and practice can be horses of different colors. This from the US Embassy website:

Quote:
Americans should always be prepared to present their passports to Costa Rican authorities. A photocopy of the U.S. passport and stamps may not necessarily be accepted as proof of status. In recent months, Americans have been detained, deported or fined due to their failure to demonstrate their legal status in Costa Rica.

Unfortunately the US Embassy, like most government institutions, suffers from extreme cases of inertia and failure to communicate.

It was the US Embassy, in San Jose, that announced in January they had reached an accord with the Costa Rican government that photo copies of your passport and entry stamp were acceptable.

The caveat to that is the police retain the right to accompany you back to your hotel and inspect the original documents.
