Does anyone know whether a Sirius or XM Satellite boombox will receive a signal in SJO?

I have not tried it, but it should work fine.
Sirius says;
*****************************
The Sirius Satellite Radio constellation and orbit were selected to provide high elevation, continuous coverage to the Continental United States (CONUS). The elevation is achieved by using a highly inclined orbit. Continuous coverage is achieved by utilizing three satellites in a constellation. The orbit is a highly inclined, elliptical orbit with a 24-hour period. The Argument of Perigee is selected to place the apogee at the longitude of the central United States at a nominal value of 96.0 W.
*****************************

San Jose is at 82 degrees West . (Miami is 80 degrees West), and the elliptical orbits cross Costa Rica.

I actually do not think it will work. I have a Sirius radio. I called Sirius and asked specifically about CR and they said it would not work.

This subject has been discussed on a few Yahoo Costa Rica discussion groups. No one has been successful in capturing either Sirius or XM signal.

That is not to say it is not possible just no one who posts there as been successful, so far.

I have XM radio, and as of April 1, if you were a member you get XM ONLINE free of charge with your paid subscription.

Since, I'm always at the prez and have wireless internet, I simply put XM Online on and play it through my Laptop speakers which sound just fine. I also play my CD's through there as well, so I have no need to carry the XM reciever with me..... Just a thought if you have your laptop and want XM it can be used that way.

I know DirecTV can be done. You have to have a larger than the standard mini dish 8-10ft and be able to hit azimuth 240 and elevation 67. Depending where you are at it may require a tower. I did it two years ago for someone.

Yes, Gman is correct. It will work through your internet connection in CR.

A friend tried to get MLBTV a year ago, with no luck. They took his money (I hope he got a refund -- he didn't say) but they refused to let him watch through racsa.
