The US dollar keeps dropping against other currencies in the world. Yesterday is was 457 colons for a dollar. Old guys like me remember when it was around 600 to the dollar. Does it effect your ability to travel? or make you think about shortening your trip. ? I contacted a regular at the S.L she sent me a pic , almost empty. She said sent gringos with money. Flaco in Ft Lauderdale |

Flaco in Ft Lauderdale It is not holding me back yet. There are still some good values in Costa Rica and a good spot to relax and enjoy yourself. Work is a bigger issue keeping me away these days. |

I remember that too. Yes it sucks but it won’t keep me away. I feel for my expat friends that rely on soc sec and pensions. |

Bothered me more a couple years ago when my finances no so sturdy however my visit a few weeks ago with better financials not as much. Still price shock on a lot of items but if shop around can find some U.S. prices. Chica values even though pricing has gone up I think is still very good but again have to shop around and always negotiate. And this for me is in San Jose not Jaco. I still love C.R. and will keep returning so long as doesn't get much more expensive. |

I agree, Jaco is tougher than SJO to negotiate |

Just heard from someone working at BCR, things are going to take a dramatic turn for the better for the dollar in the near future. Hopefully back to the 650 range |

With the manipulation of the currency it makes things look good for CR in the short term but at the expense of their citizens. Once the house of cards starts to fall it will be swift and that is what was implied to me from someone in the banking sector. They have been instructed to be prepared for the implosion mainly in business and real estate. We will see what happens but I have thought for a few years now with the influx in foreign investment plus the cartel money that was driving up the colone up would not last long. Once the loans and bonds come due and they cannot meet the obligations it will all come tumbling down. |

When the tourism comes back heavy, it will help and it will equalize out I would assume. I would rather the country be driven by tourism than the Mexican cartel money... |

DManWalking wrote: CR Sold them Selves to CHINA Years ago, Matt Included I worried about that too. I have seen a massive uptick of USA DEA and military in Costa Rica which I am sure is to pressure China out a little. But there are many different investment countries from India to China to the Middle East. It has been a good place to invest. Each country’s investors has their own reason for buying… |

I had heard part of the deal with China building the Grand Vagina aka Soccer Stadium was that Chinese people that wanted to move to CR got easy citizenship (basically stamped through). Also anything that is imported from China pays 0 import tax as opposed to everyone else being dinged 50%. That is why there are so many chinese garbage stores (cheap chinese shit) in costa rica along with a crap load of chinese pulperias and chinese grocery stores. They can import stuff for nothing and sell at a big markup. I do not know if that was a limited time deal or if it is still ongoing today. Also the Mexican cartels have set up shop especially down by Puntarenas and have the local bangers working for them which is part of the reason for more murders and brutal crime. |

Ya, since the Columbian cartels moved out and the Mexican cartels moved in, it has gotten pretty dangerous for the locals in some areas. You see a lot of young girls going missing now. Really sad. Puntarenas was a cool place at one time and the cruise ships still stop there. But go outside the little peninsula and it drops a bit in safety. |
