Unfortunately I learned this morning that Bill the owner of the Sportsman Lodge has past away. He was a great person that will be missed by many. I consider myself fortunate to have known him and be a friend. A lot of great memories in and out of his establishment. Best wishes to everyone that is impacted by his passing. I could not post the image but here is the text from it:

Very well said Ilv4play. He will indeed be greatly missed. Although not recent, I had many great times at the SL over the years. RIP Bill.

I don’t post much as I like to keep a low profile, but this is one of those times that deserve a word.

Many of you might simply know me as Coach and that’s fine for me.

Thank you, Bill, for thousands of reasons we all share. You welcomed us all into your life and shared your unique hospitality, camaraderie, and friendship, as anyone would for family, friends, and even some you probably didn’t care for.

On my 1st trip to CR back in 2016, sitting at Sportsmen’s for the 1st time, enjoying the atmosphere and a good meal, you went out of your way to introduce yourself and talk to me about several things. What brought you to San Jose, what do you do for a living, helping me get my feet on the ground for, well, we all know… etc etc…..and, it turned out we shared the same birthday and he expressly invited me to be a “guest of honor” at his own birthday bash that weekend.

I will always remember Bill for that very 1st meeting. His birthday party, going out of his way to make sure I was taken care of on my 1st visit to SJ. Not many of us would do that. But that was Bill as I knew him.

I will always remember Bill for allowing a traveler without a lot of family around, to feel welcome at the Thanksgiving Meals. Those gatherings meant, mean, and will mean a lot to me, and I cherish every single moment with all my friends in attendance…..even if I don’t know you, or even if I don’t show it.

I regret not making a Halloween or Super Bowl, but employment is important also, and retirement is fast approaching.

Bill, my friend, you may never know how much your kindness, interest, and friendship meant to me…..rest in peace sir!

Coach

He built the Sportsmans Lodge from scratch. He made so many improvements to the Lodge over the years.

In my 3 trips to Costa Rica, with me stay at the Sportsman’s Lodge on my first 2 and frequently visiting on the 3rd, Bill always treated me like a very good friend and made me feel welcome. My only regret is that I never got a chance to return and see him since my last trip 13 years ago. Rest in peace
