DFE = Dead Fish Experience, also called a NWE or "Near Wife Experience"

C. = Calle ("street") Calles run north-south in the Gulch and centro, with odd numbered Calles /streets located to the east and even-numbered calles/streets to the west of Calle Central

Av. = Avenida. Avenidas ("avenues") run east-west in downtown, odd numbered avenues to the north and even numbered avenues to the south of Av. Central, the pedestrian mall that runs in front of the Hotel Presidente, for example.

Knowing street coordinates will be particularly helpful to you if you're walking around. Taxi drivers don't seem to understand the very basic grid layout of the downtown area and instead use landmarks; building/house numbers are virtually nonexistent and unused. It's handy to understand however, that the DR and BM are in the northwest "quadrant" (North of Av. Central and east of C. Central).

LE = Law enforcement, the cops

P4P = "Play for pay," the commerce of prostitution

TV = Transvestite; TS = Person who is being chemically and surgically changed from one gender to the other. TG = Transgender. There are numerous TV, TS and TG prostitutes in C.R.; the general rule of thumb is to avoid an encounter with any of these at all costs.

Other useful terms, not necessarily abbreviations:

Gringo = Any person from outside Costa Rica, although this normally refers to N. Americans and Europeans. Not an insult.

Nica or nico = Female or male Nicaraguan. This may or may not be construed as an insult, depending upon context and tone of voice.

Tica or tico = Female or male Costa Rican native. Not at all an insult.

Chica = "Gal" in English (closest equivalent. Usually used on CRT to refer to prostitutes, although not always.

Hope these will make good additions to the list.

I would suggest a few minor changes,

Quote:
Gringo = Any person from outside Costa Rica, although this normally refers to N. Americans and Europeans. Not an insult.

Does not refer to a person who is from anywhere except CR. Is used by Tico's to describe persons from the US & Canada.

Quote:
Nica or nico = Female or male Nicaraguan. This may or may not be construed as an insult, depending upon context and tone of voice.

When was taking Spanish lessons the instructor told the class there was no such thing as a Nico. Persons from Nicaragua were called Nicas regardless of gender. Have spoken to a few Ticos about that and they agree all are Nica.[/quote]

I stand corrected about the use of "nica," however... A number of ticos with whom I spoke agreed that "gringo" refered to _any_ foreigner, although particularly Caucasian men from North America, Canada and Europe. Thus, a Brit or German might still be called a gringo. Let's get some other opinions on this; I dislike using language incorrectly! :)

Ding Dong is right. There is no Nico. In fact, Nico in Spanish is short for Nicolle.

You are both right on this one. In some countries a gringo is an English speaking foreigner. In other countries, if you are blond and white and speak a foreign language you are a gringo.

For those Ticos that know any person is nort american they will call it Gringo..... I'd say i doesn't apply for any canadian or eusopean.

The confusion to meny people comes when the don't know what nationality you are then they tend to generalize.

Similarity is the key here, white, glue/green eyes, blonde, ect. So ticos tend to think everyone is a north american from US.

Once they know, they will not call a German a "Gringo" but a german.

On the other post.

there is no such a thing like Nico for a male nicaraguan.

male os females are called Nica or Nicas

Post subject:  Thanks Mente

Okay, thanks to Dingdong, Dildoman and especially Mente. The slang term for Nicaraguan is nica, regardless of gender. Gringo refers only to North Americans (north of the U.s.-Mexican border).

I love gettin' edu-mo-kated. Seriously guys, thanks for clearing this up.

Post subject:  One more abbreviation question?

Will someone tell me what "G & G" means? There was a post in the Girls Review section that refers to G & G girls, but I have no idea...
