Anyone have any input on www.mytica.com ? A friend recommended it as a good Pen Pal site for getting to know a semi or non-pro and establishing some sort of rapport before coming down to CR. Apparently membership is $50 for the year. The problem is they never answer their emails, and the number given on their website is a Miami number where you leave a message (and none are ever returned). Web site says it is run by a couple who live in San Jose, but I hestitate on sending a credit card number to someone that doesn't respond to emails or telephone calls. Would appreciate any comments from my brothers on this company and their experiences with it. Pura vida, Ye Old Man |

A few months ago they ran an ad in the Tico Times offering a special membership price for a limited time. When I checked their web site could not find any specials. Sent them an email....................no reply 2nd email..................................no reply 3rd email...................................no reply Decided was either a scam or they did not want my business. Just my experience YMMV. |

I joined them over 2 years ago. I think I paid 30$. They had profiles of hundreds of women. Many were unattractive although there were many educated professional women . Most never responded to my emails although some did. I did meet my novia there though. It is run by an american guy who married a Tica. I just received their newsletter the other day so they are still in business. I think amigos.com would be better for far less money. |

It won't cost you a cent How To Avoid Foreign Dating Scams ----- Be warned, not every foreign dating service is as straightforward as MyTica.com. Below are a few ways you can avoid being ripped off by the many scams out there promising the world...and delivering nothing but an empty wallet. 1. Avoid women who are too eager: One of the first warning signs of a scam is if after just a couple of emails/letters she starts saying that she thinks about all the time, or she loves you, or things of that nature, check her out further before proceeding. 2. Be wary of enormous differences in age: In some countries larger age differences are acceptable, but 10 to 15 years difference is usually the maximum acceptable range, would you date someone 25 years older than you? 3. Watch out for the "need money for a visa" scam: If she starts asking for money for a visa (usually $350) and you barely know her, beware. 4. If the women seem TOO attractive: Some matchmaking services will post pictures of models and sell the addresses of women that don't exist. If you find yourself asking, "why would SHE need a matchmaking service?"...it's probably a good indicator that it's not legit. 4. Beware of "the victim" scam: Be careful of any woman who portrays herself as a victim of any kind. Beware of women who will only give you a post office box, but remember that not everyone has a phone. 5. Test her sincerity: The best way to test a woman's sincerity is to offer to visit her. If she reacts favorably to such an idea, and begins to help you in making plans for such a trip, she is probably sincere. While most of this advice seems like common sense, many scams out there prey on the emotions of men looking for a companion. Use your head and don't allow your feelings to cloud your judgment. Sure, it's easier said than done...but there are many lonely fellas out there who have been victimized by scam operations or greedy women. Be smart, take things slowly and never allow yourself to be pressured in any way. Tica Pros and Cons --- I've covered this topics several times in the past, but if you're new to this newsletter, you might find it useful. If you're not...maybe I'll say something different this time ![]() friends and I here in Costa Rica have found while playing the local dating scene for the past five years. CONS 1. Jealousy -- Whether it's due to a local culture where men are regularly dishonest in relationships...or just something in the Latina blood, Costa Rican women are notoriously jealous. Be prepared to receive a bunch of phonecalls asking "donde estas?" at all hours when you're deeply involved. 2. Time Consuming -- Related to part # 1, Ticas who consider themselves your "novia" expect a LOT of your time. This means regular dates, phone calls, surprise visits and long weekends. 3. White Lies -- I'd never say that Ticas are dishonest. But they do tend to invent "white lies" if they are uncomfortable with the truth in certain situations. I'm more used to hearing BIG lies from Gringas (i.e. "it's your baby"), so while these little untruths (i.e. "I couldn't come over because my mom's sick") might bother some, they're not hard to read and they usually aren't meant to harm. PROS 1. Caring -- Unless you were a toddler last week, it's tough to remember a time when you were so coddled with unfettered affection. A Tica will take care of you in ways you forgot a woman could and without any sense of degradation or expectations of payback. 2. Sensual -- Ticas are just so darn beautiful and sexy. Their sex appeal is primal, unashamed and constant. They reek sex and by most accounts, are fantastic in the sack. 3. Low Maintenance -- While this may seem to be contrary to points # 1 and # 2 of the Cons list, if you can get over those two demands, there aren't many after that. Ticas just want a man who is honest, caring and faithful. They don't expect constant emotional support, plasma TVs or vacations to Paris to keep up with the Jonses. I have my grievances with Ticas, but in the end the pros still outweigh the cons in my case. If nothing more, the quality and beauty of the women I date here overshadow the b.s. I tolerated from far inferior females in the U.S. This is a service of www.MyTica.com. Send questions or your own article to help@mytica.com Very limited special offer for March 2005! Good web site Buzz lots of goodlooking ladies. The price to attend the social is outrageous 250$. The price for the email addresses is a bit steep also with no gaurantee they will write back. I think I will try the old approach , practice the spanish and hope to charm them trick. As there are so many hot Ticas everywhere anytime you go out. |

I thought I read somewhere that the Sportsmans Lodge hosts one of these socials. I don't recall what the name of the operation is though. Maybe Bill could shed some light on this. |

The big advantage to joining an Intro Service is if you are honestly looking for a steady girlfriend and possible wife you can go to a social that is filled with like-minded ladies. They have already been interviewed so you can make a list of ladies from their profiles before you actually go. Having all of them in one place at the same time helps cut down the time needed to find an available lady. Of course there are no guarantees but at least it cuts the chase down to a workable timetable. |

The socials are held on Friday nights at the Sportsman but are hosted by a group called Latin Friend Finders. It is a business venture of Rico's. I understand the price is around $50.00 with an advance reservation and $75.00 at the door. I have never been to one but have talked to someone who has attended a few, his take was not worth the price. YMMV |
