I bought a Heineken at the Luz de Mono bar in Montezuma a couple of years ago. It cost 900 colones instead of the 500 they charged for Imperial. I thought it might be worth the extra money for a good import. Then I noticed on the side of the bottle, in very small print, it read: “Hecho en Costa Rica.â€
That’s kind of like the pack of Marlboro Lights I bought in San Jose for $1.25. The side of the pack read: “Hecho en Mexico†and they were distributed by a company from Tokyo, Japan.
Apparently, some large ‘brand name’ companies sell their name to foreign businesses, but the product you’re buying is not always what you expect.
